Hey All-
New to the boards here, just this weekend ordered my MCS for late July build and August delivery.
I have a question about one of the options - I hate the stock MCS wheels, and really like the look of the R-90 (?) upgraded wheels. On the MiniUSA website, these wheels are listed as a $1551 option. However, my dealer tells me these are TWICE that cost!! What gives?? (I can probably get ANY set of aftermarket wheels and tires that I want for that price!!!)

Thanks!

MSCRob

There is a cheaper way to get a set of 17" R90's. Did you want the 16" or 17"?

When I get home, I'll find the reference.

There is a big difference and probably not one you want to finance.

When I get my MINI, I will get the 17" R90s after I wear my first set of tires out.

Thanks for the input gang.

>>Welcome...talk to another dealer....

The dealer tells me that the price on the MiniUSA website is a mistake. I am sure that now that I have a production number, I can call MiniUSA and verify this (and even change the order to include the R90s if the dealer is confused and the website price is the correct price). Just wanted to check here first, since if the price is incorrect I would imagine it would have come up before.

The specs as of today (until I change them! the hardest part about this is settling on something, and after seeing "The Italian Job" last night, I've changed my mind on color choice 15 times!)

MCS
Dark Silver / White top
White bonnet stripes
Space Gray/Panther black interior
Anthracite trim
Premium, Sport, Cold Weather packages
HK Stereo

Talked to him about the JCW upgrade kit, but he tells me it will cost over $6K installed - that is steep! Despite the fact that it may void my warranty, I will probably take my chances and install an aftermarket chip, intake, and flywheel. (This should put me up closer to the JCW horespower numbers at a much cheaper price!)

Now for the long wait!

Thanks again,

MCSRob

I upgraded to the R90's for cheap! Well, sort of cheap. I believe I went to a mini2 area where people were selling wheels. There weren't many R90's for sale, but if you can find them...

They only costed me $1000 w/ dunlop runflats (which were in good condition) and $80 for UPS shipping. Nice deal I thought, if you can find something like it. Hope something comes along for you.

Oh ya, MINI of Pittsburgh wanted 2650.50 for the R90's with tires.

If I'm not mistaken, the price of $1,551,is for the rims only!. $2,600 for rims and high performance tires(Pirellis or dunlops). You can transfer your original tires,(run flats),to those rims and pay only $1,551 for the rims, and go home with your original 17" wheels.Do your research...I asked my dealer and that is what he told me...

I'd be perfectly happy having them swap just the rims.

However, wouldn't it make sense for them to put the optional upgrade wheels on at the factory and ship the car with them on, rather than give me two sets of wheels?
I'm surprised noone else has encountered this before... can anyone with the R90's tell us what you paid for them??

Thanks.

Your right, I wasn't thinking. I changed from the 16" star spokes to the R90's, so the S lite to R90 tire switch wasn't an option for me. But if you can do that I guess the $1551 price for just the rims is OK. But in my situation, I needed the tires fitted.

Here's the inquiry I sent to Classic MINI, www.driveclassicmini.com/index.asp, you'll find they can get you a great deal! The 17" R90 wheels and caps are a $1551 option, 16" R90 wheels and caps are $771 option. Don't forget tires...

Subject: MINI R90 wheels

I saw a message at minicooperonline.com from a poster named DaveinDenver
that contained a link to you.

While I am not currently a MINI owner, I love the R90 wheels and am trying
to figure out the most inexpensive way of getting them, outside of a
pristine, used set.

Can you give me a price quote for 4 R90 17" wheels.

Thanks for your time.

Regards.

Here's the response, please tell them you heard about them at MINI COOPER Online:

Mini has increased their prices but haven't released an updated accessory brochure. The R90 rim retails for $419.00. It used to retail for $385.00. The center caps retail for $2.75 and haven't increased in price. I sell the R90s at 20% off retail, along with the caps. Total for four 17 inch R90 rims, and four center caps would be $1687.00 before any shipping or sales tax is added. I can ship you all four rims for $1429.60. (within the continental USA)

MCSRob,

It sure would make sense, but I think MINI did this to please the dealers, so that they could make more profit.

As for your original question, it is common practice for the dealers to offer the R90 upgrade as wheels and tires only. That is what your dealer is offering. So, if you take that deal, you will have your original complete set of wheels and tires to dispose of, yourself.

I think a FAR better solution is to give Classic Auto Campus a call. They'll ship the R90 wheels for around $1200, I believe. You can then have a tire shop swap the 17" tires on your S-lites onto the R90 rims. Then, you can sell the 17" s-lites on Ebay or on here.

You can also ask the dealer how much for just the rims and be sure to ask them how much they'd charge you to swap the tires and balance/mount. I'm sure it will be extreme.

Good luck,
JS

Thanks gang, much appreciated.
The more I think about it, for just a bit more than that $1500 I can probably get a set of the SSR's or other aftermarket wheels which I may like more than the R90s.

So I will probably hold off and try and get in on the group buy for the SSR Comps, and then just sell my 17-inch S-lites brand-new here or on Ebay etc.

Thanks again for the info.

i paid $2650 for mine but the dealer gave me about $500 for my stock wheels so it made it a little easier. the tires are slightly different size than the stock 17's so they couldn't swap them out.
