I have a question for you S owners....(I haven't got my car yet, waiting for '04 model,in oct )...when you look under the chasis, and you look at the exhaust system, you see that there's a resonator before the actual muffler...NOW THE QUESTION...If you bypass that resonator,(a cut must be made to the pipe, before the resonator, and a new piece added to link it to the muffler),and go directly to the muffler, will that help in performance, and sound?...Has anyone done this set up?....I won't have all that $$$ for new cat back system,so a new cat-back is out of the question........Thank you in advance.....MINISPIDER

For starters, I don't know the answer for sure since I am not an expert. However, I always thought that the primary function of the resonator was in aiding suck air out of the exhaust ports of the cylinders, through 'resonation', or appropriately timed pulsatile air flow. Therefore, my thought was that if you bypass the resonator you would experience a power loss. In a well designed system like the MINI's, I would in fact expect a fairly substantial (as in noticeable) power loss.
Am I completely wrong???

I think you're right. Isn't the exhaust in the Cooper S an OEM of a resonator back exhaust system from Remus?

Thanks for all the info,I just came from looking at all the Minis at the tower shops, here in Ft.Lauderdale,I've met very interesting people, and their cars are so cool!!!! ....(I had to get my Mini fix...since I'm waiting 'till oct for a '04 model)....The reason I asked the resonator question,is because I did it in my chrysler 300M,I removed 2 resonator and then I used a " Y connector" for dual pipes, and the results were very pleasing, sincce the system wasn't restricted anymore,I've got better soung,(deeper) and better performance....so I thought, may be this same approach can be done with the mini....any comments?

If this modified exhaust works for you guys-
would you please post pictures of what it might look like?
And if you ever get it dynoed could you let us know what the results are?
Did it change your mpg rate at all?
Thanks

my mcs is now one resonator lighter, and actually sounds very much like stock- just a notch louder. and burblier. i love the burble. unfortunately there is a bit more vibration inside (most noticable at idle). but.the car feels a bit quicker overall. that may just be my imagination. it sounds just sounds racier (did i mention the burble?). aside from the slight vibration, my only real complaint is the idle sound. it just sounds, well, funny. i guess it sounds like stock, but amplified. the stock idle has a kind of muted plastic putt-putt tone. mine still has it, just louder. kinda loud and yet restrained. anyways, i think it was worth $45 and it'll help tide me over till i get that nrp.
i'll try to get a .wav file tomorrow or the next day so you can hear it .
by the way, my bmp intake is for sale (see marketplace). it was a little loud when paired with the exhaust, so i took it off. interstingly, the exhaust seems even burblier with the stock intake.

now then. who's gonna be the first to keep the resonator and ditch the muffler?

bb code is fooked. i guess by now you've figured out where they are. good luck. you'll need it. (considering the quality of the files, it really wasn't worth all this. sheesh.)

it seems to vary, but with the a/c on, it seems deeper/louder, and causes a noticable vibration in the car. especially at idle. the exhaust system actually shakes pretty hard. maybe the resonator is there to, uh, remove the resonance? maybe? i may end up putting a bullet muffler of some sort on the center pipe.
ironic. take one off, put another on...
