R50/53 Velvet Red-White or black top?
Hi everyone!!
Finally joined the site even though I've been reading the forums for months now! I've bored everyone around me silly talking about my MINI-to-be, so I thought I'd go to a more empathetic crowd who actually cared!
I'd originally picked a pure silver/black top MC (with all the packages), thought it looked really classy, but see them everywhere now! It's becoming more common as people are getting their MINIs. What do you guys think? My second choice was the Velvet Red, but I have NEVER seen one in real life! Thought this might be cool since it wasn't as common, now the dilemma is a black top or white?? I originally wanted black because of the pics I saw posted on this site, but I think white might be more Classic Mini-esque!! I saw a pic of one w/a white top on mini2.com, but it was at a front angle, so couldn't see it too clearly against the wheels and stuff! What do you all think? I am having such problems deciding! I am also getting the chrome line bumpers. Any opinions?

Regardless of whether or not they are EVERYWHERE, I stuck with my silver/black Cooper because I thought it looked the best (and it does look classy).....
But if you do want to go with the velvet red, which is a VERY beautiful color in person and a favorite of mine, I personally would go with the white top, white mirrors, white wheels. I have seen it with both combinations and that is my preference. The only downfall I could see is the white wheels.....the brakes seem to create alot of brake dust and I have to clean my silver rims alot to keep them looking how I want them too.......
Cheers!

We originally had settled in getting a new MINI Cooper in Velvet Red with white roof. When we finally got to see it in person we were a bit dissapointed at the darker than expected paint tone shade. Also under certain lighting conditions the car may look like it is brown. Don't get me wrong, it is a very, very nice color and also not common at all (Unlike Chili Red, Pure Silver, Liquid Yellow and Indy Blue MINIs which we see on a daily basis).
Then during our test drive visit, the dealer also had a Pepper White (Another very uncommon color) Cooper with black roof parked right next to our Velvet Red tester..to make the story short we fell in love with it (Keep in mind that wife and I don't care about white cars at all) as the Pepper White is truly a stunning looking color when seen in 'person' and specially with the black roof combo. The Pepper White is like a cream color, very classy and one that you could expect to find in a vintage British sport car like a Jaguar F-type. Indeed, this is not your everyday white car!.
It was a hard decision chosing between Velvet Red and Pepper White, but in the end we placed our order for a MINI Cooper in Pepper White something we had not expected to do as we were so into getting it in Velvet Red. If the dealer hadn't had the Pepper White for comparison (Brochure and MINIUSA website don't do an ounce of justice to this color) we most likely had gone the Velvet Red route.
Also another deciding factor was the cost of the Velvet Red paint ($400 charge because it is a metallic finish) vs. the Pepper White paint which is a solid color at no charge. So we took the $400 and bought the Multifunction steering wheel with cruise control option ($350) instead (A must in these cars) and ended up pocketing $50. So wasn't bad at all.
before ordering I would strongly suggest asking your dealer about seeing a Velvet Red Cooper first. You might or might not like it. Remember, it is a $400 paint color option so you need to be 100% that this is what you are actually looking for.
Interest fact is that both Velvet Red Metallic and Pepper White solid were the very last 2 paint colors added to the MINI's color option sheet and are the least common of them along right along with the soon to be discontinued Silk Green Metallic, another 'rare' Cooper color choice.
have fun and best of luck!

I also ordered a Grey and cancelled and changed to velvet red. Same exact reason. Grey is too common.
Since I'm getting sun roof I went with black top.
I might have it painted with a checkered flag
I should get it Friday

I think the velvet red is a beautiful color. I've seen it on my dealers showroom floor and out in the sunlight. Looked especially good in the natural light. Both of them had the black top.
One piece of advice, if you go with the VR/B combo do NOT get the bonnet stripes. One of the ones I saw had them and it is really to dark of a color to have black stripes.
Now a white top with white stripes and white wheels might look pretty cool!

Also, depends on whether or not you want the sunroof...some prefer the look with the black roof, others like the roof with the white! If not choosing the sunroof, a black&white checkered roof would look groovy as would the Union Jack!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! It is STILL such a hard decision! I am getting the sunroof, but the look of the black against the white does not bother me, so that doesn't even come into play with my decision! I am leaning towards a white roof because I think it will make my MINI stand out more. My dealer said they just sold a velvet red/white top yesterday, so I just missed it!!
) but I have NOTHING else to go on!! I'm taking a poll, and it looks like the white top is winning!

We got the red velvet with a black roof. I think it's a beautiful car. Since it is such a dark color we got the chrome bumpers and added the rally lights: although pricey, well worth it. We couldn't decide on whether to get the roof in black or velvet red originally. Glad we went with black! I think the color makes a unique car even more so! But, I recommend you see one "live" before choosing . . .

I've seen the Velvet red in person with both the white top, and the black. Here's what I think: Black top looks gret, makes the car look lower and sportier. White top also looks great, makes car look a little taller and more "classic."
The tan leather interior looks AWESOME with the velvet red, in either top. Classic good looks.

The Velvet Red is a very deep, maroon-ish color, like the deepest red of a bing cherry! It's original name, someone recently posted here, was Rootbeer, but I think it's redder than that. The sample online and the small sample at the dealership is not much help, either. As for being a "sicko," you are REALLY right at home with the rest of us MINI-nuts!

Since all my cars are red, I'm bias.
Red = sexy. Always has always will.
But go with what fits your personality.
MINI cars in a way are like a blank page on a coloring book.
We all fill in the spaces differently.

Nunnother, in my opinion, the velvet red is the most beautiful of all the MINI colors. It is rich and unique. I have seen VR w/ white top and w/ black top in person. Personally, I prefer the white top with the VR. One reason is I think the white bonnet stripes look smashing contrasted against the dark color of the VR.
Jamesbopp, I am also getting the CVT with all the packages you got (combos 1, 2, and 3) plus chrome line bumpers and I think xenons (trying to talk myself into spending even MORE money on it
)!!
Any chance you have any pictures of your Velvet Red MC with the white top? I would LOVE to see a pic of one! A good side view would be perfect so I can see the color with the white top and the rims, etc.!!

Will you be able to get the velvet red after Sept. 1st?
I read they are discon. that color.
Maybe, if your order gets in before a certain end date.
Velvet w/ black...saw it on alot and it was so AB FAB.

Where did you get this info??
It is known by now that Silk Green Metallic will be discontinued in 2003 but I have not seen any articles or info stating that Velvet Red Metallic is also a go.
Today I saw for the first time a Velvet Red/Black Cooper. Sorry, didn't like it... looks akward to my eye and just too dark (Just a personal opinion). Much prefer Velvet Red/White as white brakes the dark monotony a bit better.
