Is my MINI hot? (Stolen)

Just purchased an '05 Cooper S from a used car dealer. (Said it was purchased from auction). 78,000 mi. Took it to BMW and they show ZERO maintenance history. Only showed that it was distributed new to Miami and a recent oil change for the dealer I purchased it from. It feels really hinky that someone would NEVER take a brand new car to a dealer.

Question #2: Could the work history be wiped? Something there someone doesn't want potential buyers to know about?

(Carfax is clean.)

Carfax? Local Police department? Those are the only things I can think of.

Easiest way to find out is to check your VIN number. I wouldn't be worried about never taking the car to the dealer. Several possibilities come to mind:
1. Perhaps the previous owner was a mechanic or a do it yourself-er,
2. Maybe he had a shop he trusted more than the dealer and was just lucky enough to not have any warranty issues.
3. He might have bought the car in Miami but didn't live close to any dealers.

I'm sure there are more possible reasons why BMW doesn't have a service history but I wouldn't be worried.

The carfax should show the progression of registered owners and mileage.

My guess is that the person bought it at a dealership that wasn't close and just did the oil changes themselves. Unfortunatley they probably didn't do any recalls or TSBs either... :(
Just for kicks call 866-ASK-MINI with your VIN and see if they can see any service work.

Stolen? No
Not well maintained? Maybe maybe not. Hard to tell.

If Carfax came back clean it's not stolen.
Unless the previous owner was in IT for BMW I doubt if the service records were wiped clean. Thats tin foil hat thinking there. http://zapatopi.net/afdb/

I bought my 2004 MCS in Feb. of 2006 and it showed no record of work history at first. After a year, for some odd reason it showed an oil change and Service I. Mine was originally purchased in Las Vegas and was shown as being serviced in Vegas. *shrug*
