Tail light tinting... Illegal?

Does anybody know if the black tint for tail lights is illegal in Florida? Pros and Cons...?
I'm planning to get this http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=44886, but I'm not sure. Last week I got I ticket because the window tint is illegal by 14% according to the officer... (sucks!!) I have 18% window tinting. I'd like 20% tint for tail lights.

Thanks

I don't know about FL but I know it is illegal in NY....but I have it anyway. I just tend to stay away from places where I know a cop would ticket me for it. (ie like places people "cruise" on the weekends)

I believe tail light tinting is strictly forbidden in all states....mainly because headlights and taillights are regulated by National DOT standards and not by State....

Illegal and unsafe. Plus it gives your insurance company an out if you are ever rear ended.

ouch. that is true. Yes, even the nicest of all lights on a car have that huge ugle DOT thing on them. that must be part of a standard that tinting would definitely violate.

So is windshiled glass (as well as many other car parts) and it's tint is regulated by the state. Covering up the DOT information is not illegal for the end-user.

That was fun. I sanded them down really good, shot a coat of primer on them and then carried them to the body shop that did my other work and had them shot with gloss black. Thanks for the compliment.

I have it on my MINI and love it... here's a tip: use a heat gun!!!!

I don't think it's too dark... I can clearly see the brake lights and so far no one has hit me (fingers crossed) and I also have 20% tint all around.

So they are illegal...
Why is so common to see cars with those tints so?

Because it looks cool and is a cheap mod.

I just called to the police department and asked them about it. YES, THE TAIL LIGHT TINTS ARE ILLEGAL...
That sucks.

Yes....of course they are illegal, but at least around where I live, people seriously don't care. I've been pulled over twice since I've done my window and tail tint, and the police haven't said anything about it, nor the loss of a front plate (illegal in Ohio), and various other things about my car which are infact, illegal!

Don't do it if you don't want to take the risk, all I'm saying is that, from what I've seen it's usually not a big deal, unless you live in California then EVERYTHING is a major problem.

Isn't it amazing, that breaking the law isn't considered serious, unless of course it's someone else doing something irritating.

It seems like there are a lot of laws that aren’t enforced until something happens (i.e. accident) that results in an police officer looking more closely to find a cause. Then blame is found and tickets written.

Besides tinted lights, inattentive driving largely goes un-ticketed until someone rear ends another driver while talking on the phone.

My 2 cents.

I don't think it's amazing at all; it's human. Some try to deny it by pretending to be above it.

Too funny and too true.

Lets just ignore that particular law because "I don't like it" or "they dont enforce that here". Hehe, wait until you get pulled over for something else and see what happens then.

That is exactly my concern... I really like how the blackout tail lights look, but it is very dissapointing when you get in trouble for them. I got a ticket a couple of days ago because of the 18% window tints... Now it has become a nightmare for me... Even though I'm planning to go to court and appeal for some excemption for having darker tints when you have skin problems... It is a waste of time and money, but I really need the best protection against sun.
About the tail lights' tints, I think I'll be better to forget about it... It sucks, but...

Although not directly related to this particular "mod", This thread is a very interesting read about "modding" and various laws.
