I had a software upgrade done at Mini of Pittsburgh on Thursday, hopefully to solve my cold start problem. And it has

On the service invoice it says "re-program DME", but all I hear about on this board is software upgrades for the ECU.

So what is the difference between DME and ECU?

I think it's the same thing. Officially, BMW calls it the DME. Many here (myself included) use the generic term "ECU". We all mean the same thing. I know that after I've had the software upgraded, my service invoices always talk about the DME.

So, you were upgraded to 33.2? It looks like you have an MCS. I'll be interested in knowing if you develop the "stumble". On my car, and others, it took a few days and/or 50 miles or so to kick in. Let us know.

Well, I drove 180 miles home, and haven't noticed a stumble yet.

It was definitely 33.2? And you've gone through several (how many?) on/off cycles? Just curious.

Well lets see ...

180 Miles home on thursday. One stop for gas.

Picked up the kids from school, had to park, so thats two.

Off to work in the morning (fired up first time woo hoo!!!) that's three

Lunch, home, kids again that's six.

Backed into the driveway for a wash and detail and that's it.

So, seven on/off cycles, and 230 miles or so total. No problems yet.

Now you guys have got me paranoid, so I'll be paying strict attention next time I take her out for a spin.

All right, so I took her out for a spin this morning. Depending on how I start in 1st, there could be said to be a slight hiccup while accelerating. I wouldn't call it a "stumble" because it's so momentary.

I'll have to see if it gets worse as I put more "post DME upgrade" time on the car.

Hi jsun,

I had my DME/ECU upgraded to 33.2 by my UK dealer (to correct Yo-Yo) and it took about two journeys: but I obviously don't know how many the Service-people took it for.

On mine it is R-E-A-L-L-Y noticable and the car dives (as if under heavy braking) and then recovers. Only happens in 1st, and only from stationery. But it's really upsetting. This M-U-S-T have been fixed by now? Why are we testing BMW/MINI's software?!?!? Aggggghhhh!

Sorry. It's just the end of a very long protracted series of ECU/MINI problems I have been having.

Wayne, welcome to MCO!

Check out what's developing into the definitive stumble thread for what others are experiencing. I suppose that it's a comfort of sorts to us in the US that this isn't a problem confined to MINIs exported to us.

Apparently MINI is working on this with the engineers here in the US, in England, and Germany. Let's hope that they get it fixed soon.

BTW, DME = "Digital Motor Electronics" BMW-speak I suppose.
