R50/53 Getting Hitched
Getting Hitched
Has anyone taken their mini to uhaul for a trailer hitch installed?
We are having a heck of a time finding a hitch.. and getting it done in time for this weekend..
The reason we had to wait was our car was hit, and we had to wait for the body shop..
we are up to some suggestions.. anything.. we are in columbia SC.. so please please someone help me?

My guess is you will have a hard time finding something, especially in time for this weekend. I doubt there are very many manufacturers producing something for such a small chassis.
MiniDoMore (www.minidomore.com) has a good MINI hitch...but you wouldn't be able to get it by this weekend, unless you overnighted it, I guess...

I have not heard of anyone having one installed by uhaul -- people tend to use either the MiniDoMore or the MiniFini hitch receivers. A discussion of these here:

You can install the MiniDoMore yourself in under an hour -- the problem is that you wouldn't get it before the weekend.

Lilruffcat, what kind of Mini do you have? Commercial hitches are available for the up-to-06 MC's (check www.hitch-web.com, or even JC Whitney at www.jcw.com) , but only MiniFini and MiniDoMore have 'em for the up-to-'06 MCSs and MCS Cabrios. The MiniFini is probably available from your Dealer but costs an arm and a leg by the time you get the SportLink and the MiniFini hitch bakk attachment. The MDM only costs a leg, but would have to be shipped from Ohio...
Installation of the MDM isn't really THAT bad, you have to
- remove the bumper skin (9 fasteners and detach 2 bulbs)
- relocate the wiring harness (3-4 zipties)
- remove bumper reinforcement plate and replace with hitch (8 bolts)
- Replace bulbs and bumper skin (2 bulbs and 9 fasteners)
Takes about 2 hours the first time, maybe 55 minutes the second.
I'll be near Columbia the evening of July 26th (on way from Orangeburg to Charlotte) and may be able to help, but I've only done 3 of them on the earlier ('02-06) models.
I haven't done a SportLink but they're much harder.
Wiring for the trailer plug is likewise not too bad, do a search...
Good luck with it - there are more threads on this if you search for "hitch" or "trailer" on NAM.

If you do decide to get the minidomore hitch, I'd be more than happy to do the install in my garage for free. It's easy. I'll actually be installing my own new minidomorehitch onto my car tomorrow since my last hitch was damaged during a rear end accident.
I live in lexington if you need an extra set of hands, or moral support. I would have no idea what I was doing though
Sorry. Haven't checked this thread. I will be flying out on Saturday afternoon, so Saturday morning is the only chance that I'll have to do the install.
If that works you can send me an email at joliveira at sc.rr.com
H.A.W.G. feel free to come and help. Drop me an email.
