Thoughts on 2004 MC40 for sale...

Going to check out the car tomorrow, has 42k on it. I believe the owner is asking 22.5k which seems a little high to me? What would an appropriate value be for this car? Is the MC40 worth the extra money since it is a little rarer than others. I really do like the carbon dash and the nice little emblems and accessories that may go with it. Thanks

Edmunds.com says $19.8k (for my zip code). The MC40 package adds quite a bit ($4300) to the value. Good luck!

Since I sold my JCW MC40 ... thats too much money. More like $19K for full retail is more like it. For $22.5K you can buy a stripped R56. Whats the point of buying a car with 42K miles on it when you can get a new one for the same price?

I'd order a stripped R56 for similar money and have the new car warranty.

Probably not important to you...but make sure you don't want cruise control if you're gonna buy the MC 40.......although I guess if could be added, not sure how much that would cost.

MC40 package is a DE-contented car with logois and some car-specific trim. And unavailable with the sunroof. VERY cool car though. Won't comment on price since that's between Buyer and Seller, and depends on car content, extras, condition, etc. If it's fully stock and reasonably maintained, with no extras, that seems ~10% high though.

That's all good if you want the new car. There are many possible reasons for preferring an R53 over an R56. Not saying that the R53 is the better choice for everyone at all times, but some people might be in the market for an older version of any given car.

I can buy into that because I am not getting into sibling rivarly ... it dont matter to me. However, financially, the MC40 option was $7K ... and if your not interested in specifically those options ... your throwing that money away. If you want those options ... cool

Agreed. Something else to consider is that a LOT of MC40s were outfitted with JCW kits. Again, if that's a plus to the buyer, then.... well, it's a plus to the buyer.

ya i am starting to think i might be better off finding an 05 or 06 with low miles and then adding my owning personal touches, i.e. the carbon dash.

As nice as would be to have a limited edition car, it is probably not worth the extra money especially with that high of mileage, and the seller seemed to be pretty stern on his price.

I was looking at two mc40s, one in Cohasset Ma, and one in Warwick RI. The one in Warwick was pretty beat up with 20k+ miles, and they wanted $20,500. The one in Cohasset was nearly mint, with only 10k miles, but they were looking for $22k. As much as I loved the color combo, and Limited numbers, I decided to spend another $5k and purchase a new 2007 MCS.

I sold mine a year ago to CarMax in NC for $19k (with 25k miles). I couldn't find a private buyer and my MINI dealer offered me $17k as trade for my 2007 JCW S even though the trade in value back then was $23k. I would think that $15 to $17k would be more of a value. I don't think anyone is getting book value particularly as a trade in for a new MINI.

That should tell you something about people's expectations of resale values. When you say "trade-in value" was $23K, how do you know that? I hope you dont mean by kbb or any internet "guideline" because the are meaningless. They only thing that matters to dealers in the current wholesale auction prices in your area and I bet your MINI dealer knew that and offered under the real tradein value for the car. Carmax always seem to be the better deal and was probably the real tradein value.
