R50/53 new mini lots of rattles - help
i have a new mini cooper s (600 miles on the clock) and it seems to rattle quite a bit. the most annoying one is on the driver's side right behind my shoulder - does anyone else have this?
i also have the h/k sound system and the speaker on the front passenger side rattles a lot as well. i don't think the driver is blown, it's sounds to me like the metal cover is rattling - again anyone else?
thanks in advance!

j-p Bob...
Try putting some silicone on the rear seat latch
on the drivers side and pulling it back firmly
into the latch. I just found that in my new '03 S.
Re. the speakers...someone else will have to
address. Also make sure the cords that attach
the boot bonnet are attached...otherwise the
plastic ball at the end of it will cause a 'rattle.'
And remember..the car has a stiff suspension
so expect the occasional squeak and rattle.

If the one right behind you sounds like it is coming from the wheel well I have it too.... april 03 build... I have some others but they don't bother me... I am going on a long trip in the MINI soon... soo I hope to find the source sitting in back while the Wife drives.... I Will post what I find.... Stay Tuned.
FYI I expected rattles and what not... Gives the car some soul (being an x vw guy I am more than used to it anyhow) and hey with SS+ on a cooper it will never be dead quiet... Hmmmm a good exhaust system change and I could not hear them anyways

i'm coming from an audi tt with some suspension work so i'm used to stiff  i'll try the silicone, and if that doesn't work i'll just HAVE to get a new exhaust (heck maybe the cooper works kit will get rid of the rattles!). thanks for the replies
Mine's an April 2003 build. I have a little rattle coming from around the glovebox - haven't been able to pin it down. Just figured it will probably go away and a new one will come up as the car settles in.
BTW, it was ranining (sort of) on my way to work today, got to try out the auto-sensing wipers. Way cool.

My backseat rattles turned out to be the rear seat belts clips...
Try adjusting these (move off of speakers) to improve that one. Or clipping them closed (this solution is kind of inconvenient if you fold the rearseats forward from time to time. you need to un-clip first)
Also, my passenger side seat belt clip rattled sometimes when I drive solo... I added one of those seat belt pads on the belt to fix.
My dome light rattles.. on the last service trip to my service dept, they retightened all the screws and it is rattling slightly again.. oh well.
I have the sunroof rattle (but only when weather turns cold?), i did put some padding on the wind deflectors, which helps a little. I will be getting rid of my runflats soon.

Does your dashboard rattle? Mine did and the fix required removal of the windshield for easier access to the parts that needed attention. They replaced the original windshield with a new one as part of the deal. No more rock chips!
>>I'm looking forward to rattle diagnosing. Alot better than the whine from the passenger seat in the Miata on cold days with the top down.
>>
That's odd, I get a whine from the passenger seat as well. It seems to be induced by the speedometer.

i still hear my speaker rattle even when it's cranked, more so whe the song has a lot of low end, but the driver really doesn't sound blown. if i put my hand on the metal covering the speaker there is not buzz, take my hand off BUZZ. i guess i migt have to visit my dealer

Sounds like the one I had........was there for 1 year "in my ear" and some days it disappeared.......took to the dealer for an oil change and mentioned it....they removed the door panel and added some insulation material in the top area of the door under the rubber part that is visible when you open the door...presto....gone for 1 month now...........common problem on both doors. If you pull your door with the inside handle ever so slightly toward you and the door squeaks...that's the one to fix in the manner described.......

i noticed that when my children sat in the back the rattle disappeared. i also remember a post from a reader that he/she wrapped some tape or felt around the metal hook/latch on the seat back. I have yet to try that, but it makes sense let me know what you find.
Mine's a feb '02 build, and I have that rattle in the back seat. I thought maybe it was the removable trunk dash, but no avail. I buckled the seat belts, still a noise. It's not to bad, turn the music up, ignore it. Just curious how to get rid of it. Other than that, I'm solid!
good luck with all of your problems!

My MCS is a May '02 build. Center vent on top of the dash rattles at certain temp. and motor RPM's. Driver side seat belt pivot point on the door frame (diito), and a new rattle somewhere on passenger side, rear side window I have yet to figure out. 7200 miles to date.

I had a driver's side passenger seat rattle. It was the rear seat latch mechanism. The dealership fixed it for me, but I was able to isolate it and fix it temperarily before I took it in. I killed it by wrapping the stationary U bracket w/ a bit of foam and tape.
