Solstice Club Sport

I wish MINI would make something like this...

I cannot find a good page to link to, but take a Solstice (not a GXP), option it with ABS, manual transmission, LSD, and sport tuned suspension (which sounds like a very comprehensive package). No other options available.

A club sport Cooper would make me soooo happy. I guess a Club Sport MCS would be okay, though.

Sure, the market for such a thing is really small. But if Pontiac can do it.

The Sol (not GXP) did very well in auto-x this year, and if I'm not mistaken, in stock class, it yielded better times than our MINI. Althouh portly, it's no slouch...

Well, since practically every option on a Mini Cooper is available individually, what is stopping you from getting a stripped out MCS with the only option geing the LSD? ABS and manual transmission are standard. Who says you have to get all the extra options? A lot of autocrossers have bought MC's or MCS' with virtually no options except the sport suspension on the MC or the LSD on the MCS. That's basically what I did, I wanted to get the lightest MC I could. The only thing that the Solstice club sport (or Z0K package) wouldn't have that a stripped out MCS would is AC. If you really want to get hard core, just install a LSD in a no-option MC and remove the AC.

How about the Mallett Solstice? I saw some numbers on that, and although I can't remember them, I know they were extremely impressive!

From the press release

PONTIAC SOLSTICE CLUB SPORT (Z0K)

Winning in the showrooms and on the racetrack, the Pontiac Solstice is fresh off its first-ever Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Showroom Stock B National Championship, and this fully race-prepared Solstice Club Sport is a shining example of how weekend racers should equip their own Solstice for success in SCCA. All SCCA Club Racing Solstices are equipped with the Z0K Club Sport regular production order option, and this Solstice is no different. Developed by GM Performance Division, the Club Sport option features the standard five-speed manual transmission along with anti-lock brake system (ABS), a limited-slip differential and FE3 suspension. The FE3 suspension is made up of lower control arms with higher-rate bushings, larger stabilizer bars, stiffer stabilizer bar bushings, endlinks and clamps, performance-valved shocks and higher rate springs.

Powered by a 177-hp, 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with a five-speed manual transmission, no other options are available when ordering a Solstice Club Sport, but this SEMA version also features some standard components and safety equipment required by SCCA to make it track ready, including a removable carbon fiber hardtop, rollcage, Hoosier 245/35R18 racing ties, Stainless Steel Brakes Corp. racing brakes, Sparco six-point safety harness and fire suppression system. Racetech racing seats, cat-back exhaust, Sparco racing steering wheel and an Orange Crush paint scheme make this Solstice Club Sport ready to take on all challengers.

Actually the Solstice did do quite well in SCCA Solo this year. It competes in the same class as the Miata which is a couple of Showroom Stock classes above our MINI's and 7 out of the top ten at nationals were Pontiacs. Lots of reasons why I wouldn't want one, but it not being a good handling car is not one of them.

Winning times for the Solstice was 49.958, winning MCS was 52.311, winning MINI was 53.728.

We say how nice the MINI handles out of the box... well, the Sol is there, and then some. It's only a handful more HP, and quite a bit heavier, yet produced better times. More torque and rubber are most likely the reasons, not to mention RWD.

If they make a ZOK GXP, I might give it a go...

I love my MINI but also love to be the Devil's Advocate sometimes when people here post like the MINI is the only car out there that can go around a corner. The MINI's biggest boon to handling is its light weight which is inherently a good thing, but it's far from being the "ultimate" handler out there.

Looks like a fun car....

and it's not the only one that's equalling or bettering the Mini in some categories....

GTI
Si
MS3
Solstice (does the Sky do the same?)

Anyway, I hope the 07+ performance envelope can be easily extended...... Otherwise Mini will loose whatever percentage of enthusiasts it currently has for other cars. Interesting times...

I think even more impressive for the Sol (and Sky) is that they are all convertibles; which typically equates to less desirable platforms...

Not sure how many of those other cars get bogged-down with heavy and not so sticky run flats, but for the MINI, it performs much better when loosing them...

Nah Kenchan I wasn't trying to rag on you. An interesting take on handling is Car and Drivers' new Lightning Lap where they took 17 cars to VIR Raceway. It's a fairly long lap at over 3 miles and both handling and power/weight are big factors there. Neither the MINI or the Solstice was in their first batch of cars to run through it, but some other interesting facts. For instance, the Lotus Elise, Porsche Cayman S, and C6 Corvette were all on the same second with the Elise being the fastest by a tic. The Corvette should have a better power to weight, but the other two cars were close enough to have their more easily exploited mid-engined handling make up the deficit. The fastest car out of the 17 was the Ford GT. Big power, mid-engine.

One advantage that the Solstice and Sky have, along with other convertibles like the S2000 and Miata, is that they were designed from the grond up as convertibles. It is often the convertibles that are based on an existing coupe or sedan platforms that suffer chassis rigidity and other problems, but there are exceoptions to this, such as the Mini, Corvette, and newer Mustangs, all of which tend to be a little more solidly built.
