The new Porsche 911 Turbo...WOW!!!

Last night I was watching some promotional videos on Porche.com about the new 911 Turbo and I REALLY want one now! What an amazing car, and all the technology used is very impressive. Unfortunately I'll probably have to wait about 20 years because I just graduated from college, but I'm thinking maybe I could pick up a 993 Turbo in a few years. It would be a great compliment to my MINI!

What are some of your opinions on the new 911 Turbo? I've heard some purists are not as satisfied with the newer Porsches. Hmmm...sounds kind of like the current debate regarding the 07 MINI

Purists...they are not purists...real purists understand the work behind the 911 Tubro. The cars amazing but whats better is the naturally apsirated 911 GT3, producing 415hp at 7600rpm with 300lb-ft of tourque at 5500rpm with a 6 cyl. 3.6 liter engine...0-62 at 4.0 secs...now thats engineering...

Yea its quite impressive that they can get that much horsepower out of 6 cylinder engines!

I'm still not too good at posting pics, but in addition to the one already posted you can just go Porsche.com. There are all sorts of pics, videos, soundclips (I love listening to soundclips of car engines), etc..

Click the pic to be linked to the Videos (which are in flash so I couldn't go direct). I reccomend the Masterwork video.

They did an excellent job with the media, for all their models, I wish MINI did more of this type of thing (yes, I;ve seen the birth of a MINI video) instead of hosting advertising.

GT3 for me right now, as im fresh out of college, something fun and i can take the hardcore nature of the GT3,

if im 40-50 now though... i'd take the turbo... endless pace, 4wd, the all weather supercar

Wow thats hard...i'd go with the GT3 for the raw power...it has more history and racing heritage to it.

I dont understand that comment and I read most of the Porsche forums. By purist do you mean the air cooled crowd? If so, they can live in the past ... technology marches on. I've had one and would never see the point in going backwards in technology.

There is no comparison between going from a Supercharged to Turbocharged engine in a MINI vice air cooled vs water cooled for a 911 if thats is what your referring to.

I think maybe some ppl don't like that the car has grown in size to be more of a GT vice "sports car". This doesn't effect the GT3, GT2, or TT crowd, only the 997 crowd (and not really the 997S crowd). Since the CS is quicker around the Ring than the 997 by 4 seconds, if thats is all you care about (i.e., how fast around a track), then the mid-engined Cayman is more of a sports car and looks like it taking business away from the 997.

Some predict a face-lift with a short MY07 season ending in-mid spring 2007 for an early MY2008 release with more power and "possibly" doing away with the 997 and going back to one model. Who knows. Others say the face lift is for MY08 and the 999 comes out in 2010.

GT3 is as a track toy for the wealthy. I do not believe very many are ever sold. Not sure how good a daily driver it would be anymore than an Exige. however, since you can get in the door for $110 that really isn't all that much more than a well equipped 997s cabrio which can easily push $110. Its all what your looking for. The RSRGT3 comes in a few wild colors, no more power, just less weight. The GT2 should be out next year for the real track junkies.

911 Turbos, in general, are the pinnacle for the 911 owners. Its the car you retire with having all the luxaries in its lesser siblings but the power of the twin turbos. Its meant as the supercar competitor for Z06 and new Nissan skyline and Lexus supercar coming out for near $200K.

I've always liked the 911 turbo... I'de be okay with one of the first ones. The new version is amazing (from what I've read).

That empty highway picture doesn't look right. It looks like the road is tilting the car off. Maybe it's the lack of cars.

Yes Chows thats what I meant. By "purists" I mean those who dislike some of the technological changes like air cooled engines and even some of the creature comforts found in today's Porsches. I am much too young to really know how the old cars are, but the new ones sure look sweet so I figure go with the latest and advanced technology. If done right, I'll take more technology anyday...

I can say from experience we had a 1985 911 Carrera, air cooled.

The clutch was heavy as hell. The car was not the easiest to get used to. If you don't understand about oversteer, your tail will end up in the bushes. Axle hop is still an issue. Current 997s sell because of history and have much better electronic guardians to keep you alive. IMO, If you got 100K to drop, you buy a 997S because of its heritage. If you want a "sportscar", get a Box S or CS. Want a GT, get a 997!

Now to compare, we also had a 91 MR2 Turbo for less than half the price of the 911. Exact same 0-60 times, Exact same top speed, MUCH better handling (being mid-engined).

If they want to go old school ... just let them and laugh

Oh yeah, we also had a BMW 320IS. No power anything (not even windows). The story was that Bimmer makes them Spartan. Motors add weight. Motors fail so hand crank it

Nah, too old for that now. Gimme power windows

Hmmmm,

A GT3 RS or a Lake house.... Such tough choices in life. If Warren Buffet had given me a couple billion before handing his $31B to the Gates foundation, I would probably punt the lake house and go for the GT3.

But... He didn't!

I'll just have to settle with the '06 JCW!

Actually ... not quite.

That car is getting some bad comments from the p forums. Colors really bad. Not much lighter than the regular GT3. Bad press like the JCW GP, not enuff weight gone and no more power.

In fact, the GT3 comes with a sunroof which really irritates some ppl

The real thing will be the GT2 coming out next in the 997 cycle (if you got 200 large to drop!)
