Test Drove the EVO 8 today!
#1
I was driving by my local Mitsu dealership this morning, lo and behold! They were off loading a red Evolution 8, I threw ziggy into a handbrake assisted 180 at the frst opportunity and raced back, after waiting an hour for the dealer to check and prep the car, I went out for a short -really short- test drive, with respect for the green engine and the future owner -I don't care for red cars- I kept it under 4500rpm, power delivery is nice and smooth, the handling is neutral with a bit of understeer on sharp turns, unlike the MINI, you don't back off, but give it a bit more gas to maintain your line. The seats are actually better than the MINI's and the interior is nicely laid out. I will definitely be getting one of these cars.

Yeah, that would have been nice to have, but as soon as they get a silver one in, it's mine. I hope their silver is close to the MINI's so they complement each other in the garage/driveway, all the other married with children guys in my neighborhood already envy me for the S, just wait till the Evo is parked next to it.

The EVO has a really impressive engine and drivetrain but is dead boring in everyother aspect. I sat in a normal Lancer and was throughly underwhelmed. I'm sure the EVO has a higher trim level but still I cannot see it been that much better to sway my likes from the MINI. Now if I were going to start rally racing I'd be running to my Mitsu dealer to get signed up.

i've had 2 new mitsus in a row now, and will be dumping my galant to take delivery of my mini. i really don't like how they've taken their design. look at the front end of that thing! the interior...was that shot of a honda insight? boring...
not much of a racer, but if i was i could understand the engine's appeal,
but on an aesthetic level...mitsu has become the pontiac of japanese cars!

I sat in an EVO at the Columbus (I know 3rd rate) (barely) International Auto Show.
This is a nice car. The looks are subjective, and the giant rear wing is a little much for me, but over all it's not bad. It's comfortable, and the numbers are impressive. Of course, it won't take long before the Subaru STi outpaces it (June I hear?).
BUT
To me, it's just another car with limited personality. Sure it's fast. Sure it handles. Sure it's yellow. When I join the SCCA Pro Rally circuit, I'll get one. For now, I drive on tarmac.
I like my 'Lectric Bloo MINI. It's fun to drive, fun to look at, fun to watch other people gawk, fun to park, fun to walk up to, fun to walk away from, fun to get into, fun to get out of, fun to talk about, fun.....

>>Is this significantly cheaper than the WRX, or what? It sure doesn't look as nice, in my opinion, and I doubt it's as substantial interior-wise.
MSRP is substantially more than a WRX, and dealers are asking for premiums in the neighborhood of $5G's. It's price is closer to the STi, which will easily outperform a stock Evo. The initial dyno results have suggested that the power rating of 271hp is generous...

I'm just happy that the States are finally getting some of the cars that everyone else has had for years. Look through any issue of Evo and you'll see what I mean.
Say what you will about the WRX/Evo, but because people have bought them the makers have sat up and taken notice. (Different topic, but I'm also seeing a lot more Audi S series around as well.)
As for looks, to each his own. I don't care for wings, but you can hardly call the Mini understated!
Oh, and post back here when you buy it. Pay no mind to orbhot, who apparently didn't heed the off-topic forum title.

Since the EVO VIII was a second option behind the MINI, I got as much information about it as I could. It's a totally different car. No attention was given to the design of the exterior or interior, only to the drivetrain and engine. I can't understand why my local dealership is asking $10K over MSRP for this. It's quick as a Porsche though. Have to respect that.
it's 6 grand more than the WRX because it's a faster car all around. 0-60 in a WRX is at best 5.8 or so seconds. I read a test in CAR I think where they pulled 4.8 in the EVO. There's the difference.
Those Recaros though - I fell in love with them just sitting in the car. They're fantastic huggers. I'm not a fan of the MINI sport seats at all - I see no sportness to them.
It may be ugly, but it'll slap the grin right off your face when you see it on the track.
