Porsche Cayenne S (PICS PICS PICS)
Randy and I went out to lunch today and up drove the first Porsche Cayenne S in Colorado. The very nice owner, said that they had been driving it for 4 weeks now. She was cool enough to let us inside too.

Ok, two questions:
1-Is the steering wheel really a different color (darker brown) than the interior?!?!
2-And who's having the identity crisis?

The Cayenne actually looked really good in person.
Also, remember that the profit from the Cayenne is going to keep Porsche independent and able to develope cars like the Carrera GT.

Again I agree with d......Looks nice on the inside but the outside looks like just another SUV with fancy headlights and a Porsche emblem. I'll pass.

I think the Cayenne looks great. It's definitely a brave design. My only complaint is the ugly steering wheel
I saw the Carerra GT at the Los Angeles car show two years ago. droooool

I also saw the new Infiniti FX45 the other day at the supermarket and it made me sad. Infiniti and Porsche both make great cars....I just don't think an SUV crossover was entirely necessary.

No reason to really argue the fact that they are going to make a good chunk of dough selling the Cayenne in the U.S., but I do agree with the general consensus that the Cayenne is an over-priced, over-designed, and overly unattractive vehicle.
I think "luxury SUVs" take the boat for extravagance and over-indulgence. Isn't the whole point of an "Off-Road" vehicle to take it off-road?
How many Porsche owners will actually use this car for anything other than carting the family to school or to the mall? That sheen of dust on the Cayenne in the pictures is probably the most dirt it will see in its life.

Dave, I agree that anything to help Porsche design the dream cars that they really want to build is benificial. I still think that it degrades the overall Porsche image (similar to the BMW 3 series hatchback from the late 90s).
I understand that everybody is in an economic crunch and needs to attract as much market-share as possible.
However, my opinion of the "luxury-SUV" market stands:
LUXURY SUV = SILLY.
I have no problem with people spending $$ on any whimsical thing, just wouldn't do it myself in this case.

No one needs a 200 HP JCW MINI either. None of us even *need* a MINI for that matter (blasphemy I know, but it's true). We could all drive little unfun squarish econoboxes for transportation. I'm sorry, but I like living in a place where we can each choose the forms of excess we like. I happen to like my hot handling little 163 HP car, but I certainly don't need it.
Anyhow, to get out of that vein...
The Porsche 997 will be the replacement for the current generation 911 (996).

I respectfully disagree! I NEED a 200 HP JCW MCS!!!
I completely agree with everyone's right to their own excess. Just simply expressing my opinion for a subject on which I am very opinionated - over-priced SUVs.
That's all I'm sayin'!
I too am excited about the 997. That thing will be sweet! My wife's father just upgraded his 2001 Porsche Boxster S to the new 2003 Porsche Boxster S to keep up with the horsepower increase of course. Excess, surely, but again, everyone is entitled.

The well healed always get the best toys. A decade ago, a Lamborghini LM and Countach provided just the right blend of SUV and sportscar action with some parts interchangeability (well at least the same dealership). Today Porsche does a redeux of Lambo's brilliance, 'Course the same could be said of 'merican iron: a Chevy Suburban and Corvette. As For us, we'll just have to wait a few years for MINI to make a MAXI.
