People will never learn. I see people swerving all over the place with cell phones in hand. I think of myself as a pretty competent driver and I can't even keep good control if someone calls me when I'm driving. The Mythbusters did a good episode on drunk driving vs cell phones and they found both are nearly equal at hindering skills.

 

Imagine being on the other end of that conversation.

Tests say hand-free doesn't solve the problem. It is a divided concentration problem inside the brain, same concept as roadside DUI tests. We can't quite be successful at 100% control and concentration of multiple tasks. One always get shortchanged. In this case it's our or their driving and obstacle avoidance. Only silver lining is most drivers attempt to compensate by reducing speed. Lower speed give us a little longer timeframe to avoid THEM.

that was an amazing episode. especially when they started asking them complicated questions.

i usually have my universal "get off the phone" motion. Which consists of grabbing my cell, flipping it open, sticking it out the window (weather permitting), then when i get the drivers attention, shutting the phone while yelling "GET OFF THE PHONE!".

people just don't understand that while driving is useful, cars are killing machines in the hands of those who don't respect their power.

 

Not for everyone. Thats why traffic controllers are a special breed and can handle many simultaneous processes. I think the magic number is 7. More tasks than that and the average person is messed up. Of course, that means some ppl are on the low end of that curve and maybe can only handle two ... like walking and chewing bubble gum at the same time

1. Accelerating, 2. Braking, 3. Steering, 4. Observing traffic signals, 5. Observing speed, 6. clutch and shift, 7. scanning traffic in front, 8. behind, 9. beside you, 10. directional decisions on route, 11. pedestrians, kids, dogs, bicycles et.al. NOW add in taking call, making call and everything else, I think it's way past seven...I do it too, but wish it was illegal for everyone, frankly.

 

Its 7 "simultaneously" or "concurrently", like tracking seven aircraft landing at once. Sorry, I should have used that adjective. You cant accelerate and brake at the same time.

Basically you got: going at some speed, steering, observing stuff around you... thats about it. maybe 3. Now add in

1. screaming kids in the back
2. listenting to stereo
3. talking on phone
4. reading the GPS
5. putting on makeup
6. drinking your coffee

and you get the point

Car manufacturers should make cars so that you can't get a signal inside the car. Your phone will be rendered completely useless. But then, some people will purchase outside antennas, and such...

I'm an amateur radio operator. When I operate my mobile rig I have no problems what-so-ever staying on the road or paying attention. On the flip side, if I answer my cell, my concentration seem to slip. *shrugs*
