Somewhere aound here I've got an old Abarth catalog from the 1960s. They had a range of cars for sale at that time. Perhaps my favorite car of all time the Abarth-Simca 2000. 'course being a Porsche guy these days, I'd have to add the Porsche-Abarth into that mix somewhere. Even if you could find one the $$$ way out of my league though .

The early Abarth 500s

put out a wopping 32 HP! And that was up from stock! Think, it was a competitive race car, but must have been a class where Big Wheels and the like competed. Also, notice the 500 pictured above had a checkered roof? And the rear cover open both cooled the motor better and provided downforce.

And a few afters. We got rid of the stupid flairs. The previous owner had it set up for drag racing. Its gone back to basically stock except for a few internal mods in the motor. It should be a real thumper. Hope to have it on the road in a few months.

Well, i'm looking at heads now.

I found a set of really nice Aussie heads that are in Oregon, so I can save dealing with the customs garbage I assume I would have to deal with importing from Australia.

$300 bucks, checked for cracks, with factory valvetrain.

I'll see how it goes.

Oh yeah, i stopped by my local Mustang Restoration Shop (Yeah, its kinda nice to have one on the way home from work ) and got my floor for the drivers side, the inner fenderwell where the battery sits, a battery tray and 2 trunk drop off's for $95 bucks!

They are having a 10% off holiday special on all in stock parts, so i better hurry up and get my quarters before Dec. 31st. Even before discount, full skins, minus the rear roof sections, are only $69 dollars a side.

I'm starting the inner fender replacement tomorrow, so I should have a few more pics of the progress.

Oh, and we FINALLY got a plasma cutter, so i'll have to show it off while i'm cutting out my floor pan!

Al Heads from Edelbrock?

I think Edelbrock or one of the other speed parts manufacturers may be making some cleveland heads now. I think I read about it in one of the Mustang mags... Sorry, don't have the reference. The Aussie heads are good, but some modern FEI designed Al heads would probably blow them away..... Anyway, its something to think about, and if they exist, will save you over 50 lbs on the front end....

The thought of paying $1200 bucks for a set of heads for a street motor is what kinda throws me.

Just by adding the Aussie heads, I bump CR, increase flow and increase gas mileage, all on top of the obvious HP jump.

I plan on just porting matching the aussies, maybey a bit of smoothing on the intake runners, and a valve job.

I might just finish buying parts for the bottom end before i do anything else. I found a set of nice KB pistons at Summit and I believe Ross makes a set too. Flat tops. I'm gonna reuse the factory rods and crank. For the 350~ horse motor I hope it will be, I dont think it should require much more.

350 from the cleavland is

just a good build away. You'll do fine, and if you decide to upgrade later, the aussie heads will move, so you won't have wasted any $.

Well, i'm thinking of trying those new ceramic lifters, the ones that need no break in time and cost about $600 dollars for a set.

I forgot I can get parts for free if my car goes to shows with a decal on the window because of this buisness thingy

Anyways, i think i'm gonna try a few things both my dad and my builder are suggesting. Couple new things neither of them have tried yet, so we will see how it all works out in the end!

primative, cheap, torquemonster Detroit pushrod iron! My full 300+hp 5.0 motor with Al heads and roller cam, with a careful build was just about $4500 INSTALLED!

Isnt there a saying that goes along with Porsches?

If you have to ask.....

Anywho, Id probably just buy one of those prebuilt motors off ebay and swap parts from the new block, but I want to have the satisfaction in knowing I built my own

Besides, who wants one of those pansy FI motors? Carbs are the only way to go

to 302 with EFI, HP up, gas milage up, torque up, idle smoother, starting easier etc. I'm a full EFI guy now. If you want to have some serios fun, get an EEC-IV or EEC-V ECU, FI from a 302, modify a manifold, and then go to town with something called a Tweecer. See www.tweecer.com For $550, you can tune anything you want, and get real time data logging as well. Now that would be a cleavand to really blast around town in. And I'd bet your average gas milage would go from ~13 to about 20. Pay for itself in a year of driving.

Just a thought.

ps, it took two years of fiddling with the webber on my Fiat to get it just right....

hmm.... well, i decided agianst the aussie heads. i'm just gonna run closed chamber 4v's, much cheaper and easier to find.

motors going to the builder soon. gota decide on my bore size now. i dont need to go too much over stock, but, id like too drop some bigger pisons in. a 60 over se ot KB pistons is only 200 bucks, so thats probably the way i'll go.

and other comapnies do cams for the cleveland motors? i know theres a companie that did a custom cam for my dads newest 440, but it ran like 700 bucks, custom grind!

also, still looking for a set of hipo exhaust manifolds, ever se any companies that repop the boss 351 manifolds?

But you can go with the early HiPo manifolds, and get them extrude honed. That can open then up a lot. Or go with some Tri-Ys. What's good enough for Shelby..... At least you can drive while you hunt down the exotic parts. There weren't a lot of Boss 351s built, so I doubt it's being redone. And NOS will be a couple years worth of college tuition (maybe not that much, but not cheap....) Check Boss 302s manifolds. That was a Cleavand head on a Windsor block, I think, so they may bolt up. Something to think about.

Also, check out somethings called "torque plates" for the 4V heads. They basically go on the head and have a tounge that decreases the size of the runners closer to the 2V head dimensions. I've seen them advertised, and have heard good things, but never used em as I run a Windsor.

Yay! The heads have arrived!!!!

The ports are HUGE! they are as big as the oval ports on a Big Chevy!!!!

The valves are comparable to a stock 383 head! no need to do work here, new valves and springs and im good to go!!!
