New Car Smell Toxic? You have to be kidding!

It seems like everyday the news reports that something else that a lot of people enjoy is toxic. Sometimes I think I would rather live my life in blissful ignorance. Anyway, according to an article at MSNBC.COM that much loved new car smell could very well be toxic!

From the article...
Just sitting in a new car can subject riders to toxic emissions several times the limits deemed safe for homes or offices by some health authorities, though the problem tends to dissipate after about six months, according to a 2001 study by Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.

"We find new car interiors have much higher VOC levels than any building we've researched," research leader Steve Brown said. "Ultimately, what we need are cars with interior materials that produce lower emissions."

I wonder what sort of cost the automakers will pass on to the consumer to "clear the air". More reason to drive with the sunroof and windows open or the top down!!

Otheriwse if your MINI is still under six months old then don't breath deep. :impatient

I think I have more important things to worry about than "new car smell".

That mess you periodically have to clean from the inside of your car windows is actually condensed 'new car smell'.

I've always been one to run with the windows open when I can, I just find it more connecting with the surroundings, and I prefer fresh air.

Fresh air where i live is cow poop and chicken factory.

I use my recycle button A LOT. But it doesn't keep me from having all my windows open at all times

Yeah, I heard that story...they were "announcing" that new car smell is the result of plastics and glues and such. Where did people think the smell came from before this revelation? Magical fairies?

My thoughts exactly! It's kind of like the recent report that the world's scientists were concerned about the global environment.
