Why I have a New Mini Today. Not for all the right reasons.

My new mini is mine today. I am excited but this is tempered by the reason why.

I usually drive a F250 Crew Cab with a V-10. Little to no gas mileage. The Jetta was for traveling with the high gas prices.

This was my year old turbo Jetta. Black w Grey Leather. 17" Sport Package. 23,000 miles garage kept and detailed every couple of weeks by a pro. My 21 year old son made a bad decision, wrecked it and to top it off submerged it in a reservoir. ($2500.00 clean up bill alone for hazmet) Guess What? This was in VA. They don't mess around (Read the post for high speeds in VA).

I don't blame them. Alcohol was a factor in what happened with my son. Mandatory Sentance in Va. Judge has some discretion on the high side of the minimum. He got 20 days in jail. 5 days suspended. $1000.00 fine $750.00 suspended.

He walked away without a scratch!!
First, I thank God he didn't kill anyone.
Second, I thank God he is alive!

He was a college kid that was use to having a pledge be a designated driver. No excuses, he is paying for his mistakes and it is going to haunt him for quite some time.

In VA drinking 2 beers might get you a DUI. Forget what the blood alcohol level is, you only have to fail a part of the test administered and they can charge you with being impaired.

Keep safe, don't drink and drive and live for another day!

Seat belts do save lives. Check this Car out.

zoicks sounds like a candidate for Final Destination 3

tell him to buy a lotto ticket now because it sounds like most of his luck has been used up for this lifetime.

and now for his own protection and everyone else's make him a permanent denizen of public transportation

btw, congrats on the MINI

Congrats on the new Mini! Your story was interesting... but what did it have to do with buying a Mini for the wrong reasons?

In my mind, there is NEVER a wrong reason to get a Mini.

I am not ready to throw away the key. Until now at the age of 21 he has never even had a speeding ticket. It is easy to say never let him on the road again. In VA if there is a next time he would be looking at a minimum of a year in jail and several years before he could ever think of driving. I am not really sure what Final Destination 3 is all about. The way it stands now is that he has a restricted license for a year and a interlock that will record any infraction that would revoke any driving. Mouthwash or Cold Medications are no excuse. Trace levels can be recognized for one beer for up to 24 hours.

I know that when I was in college, I was not perfect. I am not proud of what happened but if it can make a difference or make someone think twice I don't mind airing our dirty laundry. I wish you and your family well. With four kids I have learned never to say never and not to say not my kid.

I didn't need a new car until the Jetta was destroyed.
Having a kid have a wreck wasn't the justification I was looking for.
I had wanted a Mini when they came out but would never pay more than MSRP.

Wow! From the photos you have sahred with us it is a blessing that your son is alive and in one piece.

And .... congrats on the new Mini. Keep your son away from it until he matures a bit.
