2016 Miata

like the looks of the new Miata, but looks like the engine will be direct injection. Wonder if Mazda has had the same problems Mini has had with this?

They've been using DI engines since 2012 now so I bet if you were to find a Mazda3 for CX5 forum, you'd be able to find out. But my guess is that they do not have the same problems.

Researching, I couldn't find any problems with these engines related to carbon build up on the valves.
Looks like Mazda engineers may have solved this problem by keeping the valve temperatures within a certain range.

They don't claim to have solved anything, just taken measures "to reduce deposit formation".

Carbon build up will occur, but perhaps, at a slower rate. Given time, the outcome remains the same.

You know, the Miata as a whole is a nice car, especially the first generations.

However, if they would have made a turbo model.. or supercharged... or something other than an N/A with 150 odd horsepower, it'd be a whole other beast.

I like the fact that they kept it N/A. Just something a bit fun about high reving N/A engines. 155 hp in a 2400 lbs car will be quick enough.

Thanks.

Growing up in Hawaii, it was the car (1992 NA) I learned to drive in. Driving it with around with the top down along the coast, to me, was just about as good as it gets. I've wanted one ever since, and the wife finally gave the approval. Anyways, it'll be great to see what the facelift'd BRZ/FRS twins will be upgraded to. I am also curious about the upcoming Fiat 124 Spyder (Fiata.)

Anyways...obligatory pics of my 2016 Arctic White Club.

It looks makes our R53 look tiny (despite it being lighter by a couple hundred pounds) due to it being about a foot longer. Interesting enough, it is about the same size (or even slightly shorter) than the F56s.

Actually the NA models had 116 HP (1.6L) to about 130 (1.8L) and there was a factory Turbo NB (MazdaSpeed Miata or MSM) that addresses the perceived lack of power. A lot of ''Miata people'' have owned all the generations and keep coming back to the NA, finding it the purest. See below LOL

They really don't feel underpowered from the driver's seat on a twisty backroad

I think one of the coolest things about the new 2016 Miata (ND), is that it has managed to maintain nearly identical dimensions to the original 1990 NA. The ND is 1" shorter, a few inches wider, and is about the same height; it also weighs ~130lb more than the original (a 25 yr old car at this point.) It feels closer to the original than the NB or NC generations. I would still love to pick up a NA (or an FD RX7 lol.)

The 2016 2.0L is supposed to be the fastest stock version of any Miata (1/4 mile times seem to run about the same as the 2015 JCW MCS - ~mid-upper 14's.) Interesting enough, it sounds like the car was designed around the 1.5L, which some people say is more fun to drive (despite being slower.)

After driving it for a few weeks, I thought our ND and R53 would have similar driving profiles, but they feel drastically different (mainly impart to one being RWD.) My R53 now feel cavernous in comparison. One thing I've noticed is that when hitting turns hard in the ND, it feels like the car is lightly pivoting around the driver. It's hard to explain. I'm guessing this is due to weight distribution and some light oversteer. I'm still quite not used to steering with the gas pedal. The suspension is noticeably softer than my R53.

I'm still in the breaking in period (under 1K miles), so I haven't really hammered through the gears yet. The ND has a higher sensation of speed due to it's lightness and low seating position. I am hitting about 38MPG in congested traffic driving. I imagine 40+MPG is possible with highway cruising (which isn't surprising considered it's a Mazda 3 engine variant.)

What I don't like about the ND:
- I wish they had gone with a different design for the rear. It reminds me of a Z3 or Jag.
- The infotainment is one of the nicest I've ever used. However, they need to update the Mazda Connect to use Android Auto/Car Play.
- No backup camera (can be installed later though)
- LSD is only available on the Club. I would've bought the more-expensive GT (for leather, heated seats, and adaptive headlights) if it had came with LSD.
- 1 usable cupholder (reminds me of my R53)
- A throatier exhaust would be great.

For me, these were relatively small quibbles about an otherwise great car. It's the most impractical car I have ever owned lol.

I went from a '92 Miata to my '06 MCS. I thought the 3rd gen Miata looked like a dud, but the new one looks great. I tend to be about 10 years out with cars, so maybe I'll get a '16 Miata when I'm done with Rupert.
