Smart cars Stupid people

Over the weekend I was in Monterey for the many car events. I have to say that if you have a chance you should check it out the cars you see driving around simply amazing.
Anyways so I saw the new E Class Coupe and was just checking out the specs etc. I cannot believe the amount of "safety/tech" they are putting into this car. Its unreal..........

Lets break this down......

Attention Assist why? Pay Attention which is what you should be doing.

Adaptive High Beam Assist.......ummm........unless the weather is bad you DONT need your high beams on.

Blind Spot Assist.......adjust your mirrors properly.

Distronic Plus......Pay attention to the cars in front of you

Night View Assist.........Turn on your headlights.

"Hey I can't parallel park......but my car can!!" Rather than making the cars smarter how about the drivers??

If people learn to drive with all these complex "safety" features they fail to master the basic art of driving. I once read a good quote "A man with first aid training but no first aid kit can still do good, but a man with a first aid kit and no knowledge is useless" and its the same with driving.

Yes, I know this is the manufactures attempt to cloak additional options/more money as safety when all you really need to do is PAY ATTENTION when you drive. Save money on options and take some driving lessons.......you will get more out of it plus it's fun!

Next, the cars will drive themselves (it's being developed).

I hope Mercedes doesn't have the same laser cruise control that Infiniti uses, my Valentine alarms for those.

While I agree that drivers could be better...

that's the world we want to live in, not the one we actually drive around in. In the real world, people tailgate. People don't look over thier shoulders... People do all sorts of really dumb things in cars and the societal norm is that this is pretty much par for the course and is accepted.

Some of the safety features are good, some not so much, and are just conviniences for those that want them. If they do want them, or the market percieves them as a way to differentiate, who are we to say people can't buy them?

And I've known a lot of really skilled drivers who have driven way past thier fatigue point. Having skill is no replacement for keen judgement, and that too tends to go south when one is tired.

We allow crappy driving as the norm. Might as well have cars that make that a smaller risk for the rest of us....

Matt

Been to Florida twice, hated it. With that attitude, and the posters who admire this post, remind me not to go back.

Florida isn't the exception buddy, I deal with California on a daily base and I would never visit either, expecially not LA.

Wow this is why I am beginning to dislike this website. Everyone here seems to be whiny about the littlest things. Look I hate stupidity amongst people who drive. Mostly cause people get behind the wheel and they go into tunnel vision mode they have no situational awareness. It makes me pretty teed for the fact that they are the ones who cause accidents and don't understand why it happened.

I've driven up and down the 101 there several times and have seen people doing all kinds of INSANE things (list is TOO long to type!). I always wondered when one of them would accidentally hit me because they try to "bring the kitchen sink" with them. Ugh. Some people simply should not be allowed to drive.
