battery post connections

My son's car (Hyundai Accent) started exhibiting symptoms today that sounded like a loose battery and sure enough I went over and discovered the negative cable terminal would simply slide on and off the battery post. easy fix I thought, until I discovered that it was as tight as I could get it yet it still wasn't tight enough.

Only had the car (used) since January, but I can't imagine it was like this since we bought it. Can't think of how it suddenly came loose unless today it was corroded on (but no sign as such).

Any ideas on how it could have happened and what I'll need to fix? The obvious would be to have the cable terminal replaced but there's got to be an easier way...

a new end ...or most car parts stores even have shims.

I a pinch file the gap so that when you clamp it ...it can go smaller.

how about a folded over length of alum foil.

Hmm. Come to think of it .. I've owned Mini for about a year now, and have never actually SEEN the battery yet. Yikes.

Since your picture shows an "S", lift up the mat in the boot.

Ran downstairs to the carpark and YAY, found it. However it looks pretty full on. Are they easy to replace if need be .. and do we have to use specific batteries etc?

All past cars have been a breeze. Could simply head to the shops and buy a $100 battery and swap it over - but this doesn't look similar at all!

I crimp the terminal (off the battery ) with channel locks and then put a metal spacer in between the space of the terminal where the bolt goes through to close the gap..

I think what he meant to say was "In a pinch, file the . . . " That is a good idea. I will try that next time.

My way is certainly low tech. I remove the terminal and beat on it with a hammer so the hole is more oblong and less round.
