AUX input/XM/iPod question

Sorry for the basic questions, I am a new owner of a 2006 MCS. Is there an AUX input on the 2006 model? If so, where is it?

Also, would the DICE system work for both a XM Roady and ipod? I am skeptical about my ability to install the system. Does anyone have a recommendation for an installation person in the Washington DC area?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

I have a late-build '06 (November) and it came with the AUX input installed in the glovebox.

Even if it's not already installed, you can order one from Classic (around $30 IIRC) and install it yourself. Do a search here to find the instructions. I use one of those Belkin Auto Kits with my ipod and it works great.

The DICE will accept the roady with AUX and integrate the iPod also. If you are the DIY type, this kit can be installed in about 20 minutes.

Here's the kit I recommend:

DICE iPod Integration Kit for Mini Cooper (Radio Interface)

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Is it a standard option on the 07? So many vehicles these days do include one standard (I had one installed when I got my 06)

I believe the 07 has one standard... I was thinking of getting it for my 06, but I have no clue how hard (or easy) it would be to install. It seems that if it's in the glovebox, it would be rather difficult!

No, it's really easy (even for me and I'm a spaz!) The AUX input doesn't have to go in the glovebox. In my '04 MC, I just had it coming through the space in the center console. All I did was reach around to the back of the head unit and plug it in. Do a search -- there are good step by step instructions around here somewhere.

Kristina,
After your post I decided to hopefully look in the glove box and disappointing did not find one. I also have been thinking of something easier than the unit that plugs into the lighter and FM station for the ipod.

You can pick up an Aux Input Kit for ~$30-$40. They are extremely simple to install and the sound you get will be significantly better than you can get from an FM modulater. I've tried the FM route in other vehicles. Don't waste your money on one as you'll likely be disappointed.

The only issue you may run into with an aux input is possible static if you plug your device (MP3 player, iPod, XM, etc) into the aux input and the cig lighter for power. Depending on the device, this can cause a ground loop. Never fear though as you can pick up a filter from Tom at EAS or your local Radio Shack that will eliminate this as well.

There are plenty of DIY threads on NAM that will help you install an aux input.

Yes, I agree. Since you can easily install an AUX input, don't waste your time with the FM transmitter thing.

As I said, I am in no way handy or mechanically savvy, and I plugged the AUX input cable in with no problems.

Also, I use the Belkin Auto adaptor and have no problems with static.

I guess what I don't understand is how you actually get to the back of the headunit to plug it in... it seems that it is hard to get to, and you couldn't see anything! I'm going to look for a DIY...

I can send instructions on how to remove the radio to gain access to the connector, email me directly for a copy.

I didn't remove the radio at all. I just removed my parcel shelf (or I'd remove the bolster if I didn't have a parcel shelf) and reached around. There is a DIY thing around here that tells you where to plug it in, and it was easy to do it by feel.
