Aux connection to OEM stereo

Does anyone know what type of connection the OEM stereo has for aux input? That is the type of plug that actually goes into the back of the radio.

Is it 2 RCAs, a regular mini headphone jack type, or large headphone jack type, or other? I'm planning on setting this up myself, and I would like to purchase all I need before I pull out the radio. I will be purchasing the parts myself at a local radio shack and doing some modifications for a very nice setup. I'll post pictures when I'm done and see what you guys think.

After you add the factory adapter (has like a 6pin plug) from dealer (about $40), the output is then regular headset jack that fits an ipod type device.. I think 1/8? (patch cable is same on both ends)

Back of stereo has no rca type plug just the 6pin thingie for the adapter.

Are there any aftermarket companies that sell this 6pin part? I always hate being ****ed by the dealership for $.30 parts. I've seen these Aux kits...do these come with that part?

Does anyone have pictures, or know which of the 6 pins do what? I can think of a thousand things to use $40 for other than this...

It's pretty much the same price across the board. $39.99 at my MINI dealer, and the same at outmotoring;

http://outmotoring.com/mini_auxilary_audio_input.html

And you don't need to pull out the headunit, just remove the piece below the steering colum and you can access the back of the headunit. I plugged mine in in less than a minute.

if you have NAV, you do need to pull it out and combine pins in one plug (NAV uses this space and same plug for the audio).

It is not just a straight wire connection, but has a simple circuit. The headunit enables Aux mode when it sees the circuit. See this: http://www.mini2.com/forum/interior-...le-sorted.html

Does this mean that Aux comes up as an option when you select it with the Mode button on the H-K headunit and the steering wheel Mode button? Right now, in my 2003 MCS, it only has two modes - Radio and CD.

First of all, you need to check whether aux mode is even available for your 2003 head unit. I think it was sometime in 2003 that aux input capability was first added to head units.

The way it works is that if no aux cable is plugged in, AUX does not show up as you cycle through the modes. After you plug in the aux cable (even if no music player is connected to it), AUX will appear as one of the modes. The head unit detects the circuit in the aux cable.

If by some chance, my radio does not have an aux mode, would it still have cd changer capabilities? if so, i could use this input. I guess I'll just have to pull it out and take a look.

Yes. Before I added the AUX adapter, my mode flipped between CD and Radio. Now it cycles through Radio, CD and AUX.

I have an 03 built in the 1st week of the model year. Works fine on my car. If your car is an 03, you SHOULD be fine, but there are no guarantees.

The OEM Aux works great in my 03.

Pull open this panel to reach back of radio, install plug by feel.

I installed the input jack here. MINI says to put it in the glove box, which seemed like a silly place to me.

BEHOLD!

This may help: DIY Aux Connector

I did it last year and spent .50 at radioshack for the 1/8 female adapter. So I thought I'd do a little write up about it.

Shankrabbit...you are ****ing awesome! That is exactly what I was looking for! I was wondering how I was going to figure out which pins are for which function!

So you actually plugged in the wires directly to the pin hole?...and the part from the audio card was what you use to plug the ipod into right? My monitor at work sucks so the pictures are very dark. If I can simply...wait I have it...it's so obvious!

(sorry, I'm feeling a little ADD today)

Ha. Thanks! Also, throw some thanks towards Ian C. (GBMINI), he's the one that supplied me with the diagram of the back of the head unit.

The pins in the back of the HU are the same distance as the typical jumper pins you find on most electronic equipment. I've heard some people use the cable that runs from your soundcard to your CD-ROM drive too.

It's ok... I'm ADD everydBICYCLE!!!!

So here's my plan:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=family
Pin connectors for the R+ L+ and RL- Those will be spliced into a female 1/8" headphone jack input. That way I can plug a 1/8" cord with male on each side to the input!

I'll post pics when I'm done.

I may not be seeing that right, but i think that might be backwards. The HU is the one with the pins, the adapter you make goes over the pins.

Here, I took one of the images and made it brighter so you can hopefully see it. (I added hand drawn side profile too).

The HU comes with the pins. The pin connectors connect to the pins with the female 1/8" plug spliced into it. Then you have a female 1/8" plug to plug your mp3 player into. That picture is without the adaptor, correct?

Ok. Yup! No adapter in the picture.

You had it right! I figured I wasn't seeing that right.

Total will cost me around $3. That's about 6x what you spent, but I don't have access to free computer parts.
