I have the new HK system, and the speed sensititive volumn is killing me. When I get up to higher speeds it adds a ton of unnecessary bass frequencies. It does this on settings 1 - 6. I'd like to turn it off! How can I do this?

I think 1 is the lowest setting but I could be wrong.

Yes, 1 is the lowest of the six. However I'd really like to turn it off.

Dominic,
It's inside noise sensitive volume, not based on speed at all. "1" is the lowest. This is covered in the radio owners manual, not in the standard one. I don't have a copy here but I'll look tonight and pass on the procedure if you don't get help from someone else.

Wow! I didn't know that. So if I open the sun-roof it should adjust for it?

That only allows you to hear the backwards masking in certain songs from the Beatles.

Dominic,
Well, if you open the sunroof, it could get louder or quieter inside the car and the audio volume would adjust up or down. There's a microphone in the car that measures the ambient noise inside. It's my understanding that it's the same mic that might someday be used with a hands-free cell phone and it's located behind the little grill in the headliner, near your rearview mirror.

I wish I had the procedure for turning this auto volume off. I'll look tonight and pass it on. Of course, if involved holding down that musical note button on a standard MINI stereo. Your hot HK might use something different.
Motor...

nfo,
That's my understand from reading tons about this stuff for a long time. However, I have not pried the little grill off myself to prove it.

I have my auto-volume set to about 5 and love it. I noticed once that when we were riding the car and yelling at each other, the audio adjusted up so it could be heard above the yelling.

KensMini,
I did not know that this was true, and never noticed it in my MC; maybe having no kids helps

Dominic - I find the HK adjusts the sound almost not at all at setting 1; much less than the stock system in my MC did.
If you set it to 1, then exit, then go back later, it *does* remember that the setting is 1, does it?

Just got my MINI Sunday! with HK and Nav. I have tried to adjust the speed sensitive setting, but find that pressing the music note button twice does not bring up the volume 1-6 option function. Is it possible that that function is disabled? My system as it is does not adjust the volume by speed.

Yes, it remembers the number just fine. I'm still haven't got that adjustment to where I'd like it.

Press and hold the note. Then it displays. Then click the note to cycle thru the two options. Sensitive volumn and nav volumn.

Thanks Dominic, and It makes sense that it should work, but after the display, i click again and it goes to balance or fader or one of the other choices., Never get the NAV Volume or Speed volume adjustment, no matter what I do. I must be broken.

Update:

I found I can get rid of much of the artificially boosted bass by turning off and waiting a few seconds, then turning back on the radio while driving at speed.

I also notice there's too little bass at low volumn (like many radios have a system that adds bass to lower volumn levels to even out the frequency range).

I would LOVE to find out how to disable the speed-sensitive EQ, it violates my technical-ethics completely. When I tune a system, that's the way it is, don't "Bose" is up for me

Can anyone else with the HK confirm this for me?

I took my car into Northwest MINI and they simply put in a new radio and my speed settings work now. I had a defective radio. Funny but the only think that would not work was the speed compensation options.

I remembered to do this this morning.
After the switch off (about 50mph) the overall sound level was distinctly lower; there was also less bass emphasis.
It was as if the speed boost was reset to assume that 50mph was the "idle". I did not pay attention to what it did after I slowed down and sped up again.

More electronics = more quirks?
