XM Blitzsafe Install (yet another question)

So I got the XM Direct with Blitzsafe kit. Tested the thing in my MINI and it works fine. The hardest part I'm finding is running the wire through down to the compartment on the passenger side. On a couple places, people have mentioned running the first bit through the large grommet on the top, in the center. I find that rubber thing is really secure to my roof and I'm having a lot of trouble getting it past that point. The other issue is dropping the wire down the right-hand side c-pillar. Am I supposed to drop it from between the headliner and roof, down the c-pillar (assuming through some hole) and find it in the boot's right-hand compartment?

I have an '06 with HK if that helps any. The HK install is still fairly simple and not much different from a stock HU, but the major problem is finding space.

Hah, I figured it out. After some prying, the grommet came out as a plug. The wire got tucked under the weather striping down the c-pillar and then I pulled it through. Ahh, XM. Now to activate!

Just about to post, but it sounds like you got it. Yes, the grommet is actually just a big, lumpy plug.

Here's a couple of notes that may help you:
  • Make sure not to let the antenna wire fall down around the rear seatbelt retractor in the C-Pillar. It could get tangled up with the wire when the belt is used, jam the mechanism or rip the wire out of the tuner box.
  • I ran my antenna wire BEHIND the H/K amp, then bundled the excess together with a wire-tie on the 'shelf' just below the amp as seen in the following pics. This also illustrates how I mounted the BlitzSafe and XMDirect boxes, with the BlitzSafe unit actually installed BEHIND the XMDirect box.
  • The wire-tie seen holding the XMDirect box at an angle was done on purpose. I could have let it lay flatter to the right, but that would let the puny antenna wire and pink connector ride against the right side of the interior metal panel. That may cause the antenna wire to chafe over time, make noise (rattle) or at least interfere with the reception. This position allows the antenna wire to hang freely without any tension. It also prevents any fore-and-aft movement by the box itself.
  • You can see here that the BlitzSafe wiring is longer then really needed, so I ran the wires up, to the right, back down UNDER the XMDirect box, then back up to plug it in on the left. That took up all the slack without having to bundle the wires together somewhere. It also looks better and is easier to trace...
  • Note the little rubber grommet I stuffed into the mounting tab on the top left of the XMDirect box. It prevents the tab from making metal-to-metal contact with the H/K amp. When the cushioned access door is put back on, the whole deal fits snuggly but without being forced, which prevents rattling even further.

Hope that helps...
.

It definitely helps out with the cleanup. I used some cotton fabric behind the XM Direct unit so it wouldn't bang against the HK amp and the Blitzsafe unit. I'll probably go through it and clean up my wiring to look more like yours since it seems pretty sensible.

I really should test out the rear seatbelt a bit, especially since that's the one that gets used the most (in the rear that is).

Glad you got it all together. Post some pics when you finish your clean-up.

Enjoy your XM Radio, and let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi, I have a couple of questions and I hope you can help me get the right parts. I have a 2006 MCS that I am putting the XP setup in. I ordered the parts but once they arrived I see on the BLITZ-safe it states that it is for "all MINI Coopers from 2001 to 2004. Needless to say I think I ordered the wrong part but I a unsure of what part # I need to order for my 06.

I ordered Blitzsafe part # MINI/AUX DMX V.1
XM Direct part # XMD1000

Now Im not sure that this is going to work. Can you let me know what the part #'s are for the 06.

Thanks,

I too just put XM in our new MCS. The Blitzsafe part number I bought is
#BMW SLD 00.
This unit is for a standard head unit and with NO extra inputs for CD changer or iPod installation.
Also I don't know if you had a problem with the NAM discount, but I had to do everything but threaten them to get the 20% discount. The list is $200, and $160 discounted.

Here is another place to buy. MyRadioStore.com Blitzsafe and XM Direct for $184.99.

I bought mine here so I can vouch for their customer service.

XM with the iPod interface (not just an iPod through the AUX input) will work, but it requires a different part. Check this part out:

Blitzsafe SLD03 with XM Direct for BMW / Mini Cooper with iPOD

XM and OEM IPOD?

So, minitee, do you have the OEM ipod adapter and the blitzsafe XM? They both work?

Can anyone else confirm OEM ipod in the glovebox and the Blitzsafe XM in the boot?

Sorry, minihawk.... I have the Aux Input and the XM Blitzsafe. The Aux input is way cheaper and more flexible for other MP3 players and such. Its no big deal for me to just switch albums on the iPod from time to time.

This is the unit I have

You can install an iPod with the XM Direct + Blitzsafe setup. You need to order the Blitzsafe BMW/MLink. This connects to the pass-thru connectors on XM Blitzsafe unit that would normally connect to the factory CD changer.

The MLink has about a 20 foot iPod Dock cable - plenty long enough to reach from the boot to the dash area.

The MLink does not integrate control of the iPod to the factory HU - only audio and iPod power. You control the iPod from the iPod. I've had this installed for about a month and it works great.

I presently have an XM Commander from another vehicle.. should I use a Blitzsafe to interface with the HK radio? I plan to install (when I get my MCS) an aux input to support an mp3 player (non-iPOD). So would I be better off just sharing that input?

daleb:

My opininion, for whatever that's worth... I prefer the Blitzsafe/XM Direct route as it makes for a clean install. I even have two spare XM Roady's and chose not to use one in the MINI. If you use the aux input - you'll need to also install a ground loop isolator if powering the MP3 or XM Commander from the car (cigarette lighter). See other posts regarding the reasons why.

If you're handy, I can also provide you with instructions on how to install the innards of the XM antenna inside the factory antenna housing on the roof. This is where the factory Sirius antenna would normally go.

Well, you've definitley 'been there, done that'. I would appreciate the info.
I will not be taking delivery of my MCS for a while, but if you have a link or something to DL, I would appreciate it.
I used a BS in our Honda with the Commander, wired the ant through molding, etc. etc.. so I am familiar with the process. It was a very neat install.
thanks again in advance!!

(The mp3 player has a rechargeable battery so no need for hardwiring there. That one is strictly plug n' play).

I have the XM/Blitzsafe in the trunk now, and just got an iPod for xmas - I have the Aux input in the back of the headunit, but I want to be able to charge and control the iPod from the head unit - is there any kit/wiring that will put the ipod into the head unit while still retaining the satellite radio in the trunk?
