question about head unit and speakers...

so i have a 03 mcs... with the radio/cd unit and the "6 speakers" set up.
my question is...

how many actual speakers out puts does the factory head unit have.. 6 or 4?

is there a crossover on the front components? or is it a channel to each one?

does any one have the specs of the factory head unit?

i want to do some audio upgrades but i wanna keep the factory head unit to keep the interior of my car virtualy untouched... so i want to work with the factory head unit...

Heck, I got a similar question. I have an HK unit which is supposed to have 8 speakers. I see 2 on each door and two in the back for a total of 6. Where are the other two?

My MA told me the speakers in the back each have "two cones", therefore they count as two speakers each.

Seems like a stretch of words to me...just like the "iPod" adaptor that doesn't allow you to see track titles on the head unit. Very un-iPod like.

I believe the factory radio has a 4 channel output.

Left Front Right Front

Left Rear Right Rear

The front speakers are components, which count to the head unit as "one" speaker, even though there are two physical speakers, one by the door handle, and one down by your feet. The rear speakers are single speakers, double in HK systems.

2 in each door plus 2 rears = 6 speakers for standard systems.
One of the best mods to my MCS was the stereo. Clarion DXZ945MP head unit, Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components up front, Kappa 6x9s in the rear, a Pheonix Gold amp and an Infinity Basslink (removable self powered sub). 7 speakers (counting the sub) and killer clean volume.

The standard head unit has 4 channels, two for front and 2 for rear. The front 4 speakers shares one L/R pair. There is no crossover other than a capacitor in series with the tweeters. You can consider this as the crossover if you will.

I don't believe you'd have to change the head unit...

If there's a single cap in series with the tweeter, it's merely a passive high-pass to roll off the low stuff from it. If the filter is truly no more than that, then you should be able to replace the door speakers with the full range speaker of your choice, provided the impedences line up correctly.

Holy mackeral, I just found this thread. Minihune links to more info than you could possibly need...
