SIRIUS in '02 w/ '05 head unit....comments?

Hello to all...

I want to install Sirius in my '02 MC, I have an '05 head unit installed

Here's the "problem", I spoke with Tom at Classic and he tells me it can't be done. I being skeptical, called MINI of Pittsburg, they say it CAN be done. I then called three other MINI dealers with the positive response.

I am assuming that the Sirius part is in the head unit and has nothing to do with the car itself. The BMW/MINI Sirius plug in goes into the head unit and only uses the car's power and a new antenna for the Sirius.

Has anyone else done this? Does anyone else think the same way as I do, that it should work due to the radio being Sirius ready?

I would like a few comments before I call and schedule an appointment at Classic and half way through they tell me its $180 and they were correct in saying "it can't be done".

I haven't done this but it sounds like it will work fine. Why are you having Classic do it though? Any car audio place will do this for your for about $50.

Any car audio place can install the factory MINI Sirius unit for about $50?

not sure if this is on topic

Is the siruis unit the same as the xm one? I don't have any experience with either setup from the dealership but I did buy the xm direct kit with the blitzsafe adapter and I installed it myself.

No they're not, two different units. The Sirius is integrated with the head unit.

Wife has XM in her Accord, I've got Sirius in my MCS, figured I'd go with the Sirius for the cheaper second unit

My xm plugs into the wiring harness in the boot where the cd changer would be installed at and I control it with the MSFW as if it were part of the headunit. It displays the artist and song by pressing one of the buttons on the headunit. Is that how the Sirius operates?

Same dilemma here, have an 02 MCS, want to install Sirius for long trips, since I already have Sirius in the other car. However I was told today by Princeton Mini that they cannot put in an 05 head unit in an 02. Where did you get your 05 head unit, how much did it cost - did it need a separate tuner for Sirius or not? The reason I would prefer to keep an OEM headunit is to keep the interior as stock looking as possible, none of the aftermarket headunits seem to 'fit' with the interior.

I have an '05 head unit in my early build '03 MCS and also have Sirius installed in the car. That is why I am under the opinion that an '02 will be the same thing.

I paid $150 for my head units, both '05, I will update as I am doing the Sirius install late next week in my '02 after I get the other '05 head unit.

You can also do this with any late '03 on head unit with the Sirius.

Where did you buy the head units? Do the units use a separate Sirius tuner?

Yes. The MINI head unit is compatible with Sirius but does not have a Sirius tuner. When you purchase the MINI OEM Sirius system you are getting a tuner, Sirius antenna (replaces your existing AM/FM antenna base) and all associated wiring.
