Navigation & Audio SONY PSP, have anyone got it yet?
JUST got it! Awesome graphics, battery life, wonderful mac-ability, play games online using your current wireless setup, easy as heck to use. I am going to mount it in the mini tomorrow I think and use my wireless fm transmitter to see how good the sound is.
I've had one for 3 months, ordered it from Japan. Just got my U.S. Version yesterday. It supports Mpeg 4 video, and MP3 audio. Hook up to computer is acomplished by using a USB mini plug/plug. I have a few games already, I think the best ones are Spiderman 2 and Wipeout pure.

Maximusmini,
How can you say the battery life is good? 3-5 hours for games (which is pretty much what it gets for graphic intense games) is not very good. I read one review where the person watched the Spiderman 2 UMD and it drained half the battery...leaving another hour, maybe two for gaming.
It's a neat thing, it's too much $$ for a portable - buyable once it drops to $200 or $150.
I heard the loading times were pretty poor as well...not very fun if you just want to pick it up and play it for 5 or 10 minutes on the train or bus.

1) Its size seems large at first but as you play it becomes more comfortable and the size isn't an issue.
2) I haven't played it enough continously to drain the battery much. The device does have settings for the screen brightness to lessen the battery drain.
3) The screen is AWESOME. Enough said
4) Load times - For the included Spiderman 2 the loads are rather quick. I have spent a few hours playing 'Need for Speed' on it and the loads are not to bad. Much faster then my Xbox for sure.
5) I don't like the door that opens to let you pop in a game. (Push eject, a side panel pops open about 1/2" and the game pops up. You then put it a new game, push it in till it clicks, then close the door) I can see this breaking easily with a person/child in a hurry or frustrated.
6) I agree the price is a bit high right now. Most kids will not get this unless its a gift. Similar to what happened with iPod Minis during the holiday season.
7) I have this new UMD (Universal Media Disc) - a new format, another Sony only thing.
8) It takes a new version of Sony's "memory stick". The 'Memory stick Duo' and 'Memory stick Duo Pro'. Yah so now I need a whole new set of memory chips. I can't use one of the half dozen other Sony chips I already have.
Ok, ok so you read my post and are wondering "why did you buy it and if you hate it so much why do you still have it??!!!"
Well its so much fun to play and the technology and appeal of its crystal clear screen are to much. What can I say I love my gadgets.
Just some thoughts. I'm out to test the Aux input with this as well as download a new file to send to Franz (MTH).
mdsbrain,
Yeah...Sony really sucks about things like that. They love their proprietary formats and they always will.
Because of that nice screen though...I really don't see it being as portable as an SP or DS - which are clamshells. Both of which I can easily just toss in my bag on my way to work and not worry about it.
Curious why they have no in-store displays though...and it was really awful how the online retailers wouldn't sell the system just for $250. They required you purchase at least 3 or 4 games to jack it up to a minimum of $400.
Sounds like Sony just wanted to impress with strong software sales on launch, even though most were forced if you pre-ordered online.
I know what you mean about where you put the disc in. Sounds exactly like videocamera tape mechanisms...they have so many moving parts it seems like it's just itching to break. Flash memory is getting cheaper and cheaper these days...an optical drive is really killing the battery life. I would have liked to see something else.
It's cool, no doubt...a little pricey especially since everyone thought it would drop in the US for about $200 (it retailed on launch in Japan for $180 USD)...but we'll see.

pezbok - I bought mine from a local Bestbuy with no reservation or money ahead of time. They had plenty in stock and even had a salesperson dedicated to selling them on launch day with a table of games and accessories. I could of bought the system by itself for $249.99 but whats the fun of that eh? They had a deal (haha yah deal) that you buy the PSP, 2x $49 gams and this accessory pack for another $49 and you get a $10 gift card on the spot (for use with your next purchase). Well I bought all this then exchanged one of the games and when I did I used the gift card.
As for the moving parts like a camcorder, your exactly right. Its the same motions and device. I also agree with your on the flash memory. But I looked into buying a 2GB Memory stick Duo online. Best price was $244. Thats way to much for now to make putting games on them affordable. But if Sony got into it the price would surely come down.
Also yah the price on this thing is high. Heck for $250 I can think of alot of devices in the same price range. But they don't do so much. Such as a Portable DVD player, cell phone, iPod, you get the idea.
Man I can post long ones when I want too...
I hope my spelling and grammar is ok.
You bought games for $49?
All three of mine were $39.
The reason it's more here is because we have the value pack, not just the system itself. The Japanese value pack was around the same price as ours. There is some speculation that this launch is sort of testing the waters, and that later Sony will ramp up the advertising along with the debut of the PSP only boxes. It would depend on when they can get more LCD screens, I guess.
This is meant as an adult toy. I think Sony is thinking adults can take better care of their things than some 6 year old with a gameboy advance. (this is not to say all GBA owners are 6 year olds) Just stick it in its padded sleeve and you'll be fine.
As for battery life, I haven't drained mine yet. Two of my games, Wipeout and Twisted Metal, preload every stage so the umd doesn't get usage during it, but this is how they worked on their playstation and ps2 counterparts too. I haven't watched Spiderman 2 all the way through, but then again, I have it on dvd and have seen it enough as it is.
It's not all that big, imo, but then again, I have a Sega Nomad and a 12lb laptop, so my idea of portability is a tad different, lol. Holding it took me a while to get used to, especially for the left side.
Now, the only reason anyone buys a gaming system is for the games, and I have to say, I have always loved the Wipeout and Twisted Metal series, and the PSP games don't disappoint. My third game, Mercury, is released next week. I will definitely be picking up grand theft auto and gran turismo 4 when they come out, and there's still a couple launch games I'd like.

tygirwulf,
You're right...I forgot that they also sold the Value Pack for a higher price in Japan. Hopefully, as you say...they will release just the unit for around $200 - maybe for the '05 holiday season. There really isn't $50 worth of stuff in the Value Pack anyway.
Hey, you never know...I will have that tax refund coming in soon.

I will have to disagree with you on this one.
PACKAGE CONTENTS:
PSP Hardware, 32MB Memory Stick Duo, Headphones with remote, Battery Pack, AC Adapter, Soft Case and Cleaning Cloth, Movie/Music/Game Video Sampler, Plus Spider Man 2 Movie (Limited Quantities).
I wouldn't use the PSP for any of the mp3/movie/whatever things...so I wouldn't need the Memory Stick (or USB cable as you say, although not mentioned in those specs)...I wouldn't use their lame headphones...I'm sure better cases will be on the market (if not already are) and the whole movies on UMD thing is really lame. I guess it's cool they are throwing in Spiderman 2, but nobody is going to pay almost the same amount of money for a UMD of a movie than a DVD of a movie.
I'd like to see it at $200 for the PSP, battery, ac adapter, and maybe the cleaning cloth.

You got me. I forgot a few of the other items included with it. I've only had it a day.
But I agree this new toy will be mostly for gaming to me. And that would be nice if they included a little less with it.

AFIAK,
there is no region code for the games so any game with work in any PSP..
No need to buy a US version to play US games. But there is a region code in the Movies.
I got mine and I'm happy I did. But I don't think I'll be playing with it much.

Well, a buddy of mine was going to go buy a PSP so I went over with him to Best Buy to get it. They had between 100 and 200 in boxes behind the counter, and said they had sold only a few.
Also saw these great deals if you want an extra power adapter or battery! Sold out.
It's pretty slick, but gets so many fingerprints/smudges wherever you touch it. Played Wipeout a little, it was nice. Graphics I would say are somewhere in between psx and ps2...lots of jagged edges but not too much of a burdon. The little analog thumb thing is sort of cool and might be good with more practice but I felt the d-pad was easier just to start off with. No dead pixels on his unit, either.
