Is It Possible to Install CarPlay in an F56 That Doesn’t Have It?
My 2017 F56S apparently has the "ENTRYNAV" head unit, and I have the 6.5" screen. I do not have Harmon Kardon sound. I have no aftermarket audio/navigaton modifications, and I do not have working naivgation features in my existing head unit in any way. I do have functional factory Bluetooth (both for music and phone).
Bone stock, you get the idea.
If I can lay hands on a used NBT Harmon Kardon head unit (**not** NBT EVO), would it be possible (without having to sell my first born child and learn to levitate while sleeping) to:
(1) Swap it in, in place of my ENTRYNAV unit?
(2) Get Apple CarPlay running through the NBT head unit?
My primary interest is a path to CarPlay. Anything else I can ultimately do to improve the car audio as side-effect of the described head unit swap would be gravy.
I am comfortable with coding. Have never taken on coding with respect to this set of needs/interests, but me and the expert mode of BimmerCode get along pretty well.
Thanks for any guidance!

EVO means "EVOLUTION" and an NBT EVO(Touch feature) has a different software interface versus a plain NBT system.
If you swap your HeadUnit without authorisation from BMW/MINI your new & or the original HeadUnit have a risk of being bricked.
BMW/MINI are particular with how they have uniquely assigned each head unit to its "parent vehicle".
So, swapping of "HeadUnit part" is not as easy as in a Kia or Hyundai and definitely not a "plug and play thing" to implement.
The route you will have to take for swapping a "Head Unit" will be to get the headunit coded to match your vehicle ID and such a coding done by 3rd party will be delicate= should be careful in updating or flashing as everything will get messed up/bricked.
There are online retailers in Europe who do what is called as "bench coding/hacking headunits " wherein they purchase a "used head unit" and modify it to be acceptable by your cars VIN.
These HACKED headunits are from thereon> not eligible for modification by BIMMERCODE app.
The BIMMERCODE app does not recognise the HACKED bench coded headunits and you will not be able to edit them using the OBD2 adapter & BimmerCode app.
However the "Hacked BenchCoded HeadUnit" can still be edited using eSys via a PC and ethernet cable.
If your aim is to have Wireless Android/Apple Carplay, the bets option for you is to buy a MMI prime Kit from BimmerTech Website suitable for your vehicle.
Harman Kardon sound system needs Amplifier and an EntryNav headUnit does not come with/have an amplifier.
If you want Harman Kardon sound, you need to install harness & original amplifier with bracket in the rear and code accordingly. This is tedious expensive process.
The best solution is to upgrade your speakers & install an amplifier under the "BIMMER TECH Studio Package" which includes a German Amplifier from brand MATCH as well as premium custom speakers called as ALPHA.
Hope this helps you make the best choice suitable for you.
There are U.S. based people (like me) who can help with retrofits too.
And to clarify one of Varma’s points, Bimmercode intentionally blocks coding on headunits with fsc codes created by the most common aftermarket method. I think this is more about a dispute between the two developers than anything technical. Other tools, such as Protool and Esys are able to code retrofit headunits without problems.
Please feel free to ask any questions.
