A quick DIY HK amp repair job :)

MCS R53:
Mine was playing up as in the rear speakers were distorting and making a really loud buzzing/static sound (the fronts were fine).

I simply took the amp out of the car took it inside, took the 2 end cover plates off, got a hair dryer and blasted it through the amp for a minute.

Result: Amp has been working fine all day

I guess where they're mounted they must be prone to damp

Anyway - try this simple repair before paying out for a new one.

Nice tip, but I wouldn't call this a repair at all.

It just points to a possible issue that will need to be addressed eventually, be that water ingress, dry solder joints or corrosion on connectors.

A.J Was there signs of moisture getting in or on the amp? Any signs of corrosion?

For anyone else who visits this thread, the hairdryer trick; on a device that gets plenty hot enough on its own to the point of needing a heatsink and vented enclosure; is a placebo.

Best case analysis there was corrosion on the connector that was scraped off during the disassembly/reassembly.

Worst car the car has a water leak and the next time the failure might be permanent.

Placebo or whatever you call it pal, it done the job..... for a few days ...... and then stopped working again LOL!
I've now replaced the amp with a Phillips DAP600 which I've had sitting here for donkeys years - it sounds amazing!

Sounds like I was right then!

The DAP600 was a great amp, massive though, is it 2 Ohm stable, because the speakers are 2Ohm nominal!

What did you do about the crossovers that were in the HK amp?

I used a pair of Phoenix Gold crossovers I had lying around. The amp is 2 ohm stable if bridged however I haven't bridged it and it all sounds amazing in 4 ohm mode - which I'm still surprised at, the amp hasn't cut out or gone into protection mode (yet) lol.
it sounds much much better than it did with the HK amp.

Now I'm tempted to dig out my old 90's hifi and install something.
