Dealer fried my "Radio"!

I was just informed by Austin Mini that during a routine service on my 2012 Mini Hardtop S, with Mini Connected, Nav, and Harmon Kardon, that my "radio" was fried (bricked) during a software update.

What?

I searched the site but found no threads that speak to this. Anyone ever have something like this happen or know about it? I have concerns that this will lead to many more issues.

The Ghost Of Lucas lives on!

Sorry to hear about this. Wishing you all the best. At least you've got a good dealer who'll make it right.

why is radio in quotes?

someone screwed up a software update, it happens. as long as they're fixing it, which it sounds like they are, i'm not really sure what the concern is?

"Radio" in this case encompasses a lot. It just seemed too simple to me to say that. The concern was that they said it never happened before, I was simply asking if anyone here had heard of a similar issue. Was my post that difficult to understand?

Its actually not that uncommon for the radio's to fail during programming. We don't see it happen much lately but in one of the software updates last year had radio's dropping pretty regularly. Enough were failing that the engineers had to come up with a recovery procedure which worked about half the time. Nothing worse than telling a customer well I updated your car for the erroneous brake wear warning but your radio died during the update.

I forgot, but that happened to me last year, too! MINI of Austin, also.

I was happy to get a new radio/etc., but I tried to get 'em to ditch the satellite rcvr and give me the HD radio instead. No deal.

It's happened to a few of my MINI friends over the last few months.

The radio is the longest part of the reprogram, Im assuming its a hard/software issue but it and the clusters seem to be the only modules that sometimes have an issue during the process.

I really appreciate those of you who helped me understand that this is more common than I was led to understand. Do any of you think that there could be any residual issues? I just hope that there won't be a steady stream of problems going forward.

Doubtful, look it happens... Not just to Minis.. I've bricked a trans module on a late model Ford when I kicked the OBD cable out of the socket by accident.

Just replace the module and move on.. I'm sure nothing else got damaged...

Yeah you wont have anything to worry about. Your stations will be lost unless they wrote them down before beginning programming and if you have an active sat radio subscription, it might need to be reactivated. Other than that everything will be all good and you will have all the latest vehicle software.
