Mounting depth for 6X9s in rear door
I have 2010 Cooper with HK sound. I want to replace the 6X9s in the rear side panels with 6x9 free air subs that have a mounting depth of 3.5 inches. Will the speakers fit?
which free air subs did u buy and what amp r u gonna use? I want to do the same..... I found, cdt 6x9 sub, and a Lanzar MNX260 amp.......r u gonna tap rite from the speaker wire or from the input before the amp????? inquiring minds want to know....
Thanks
Thanks
The speakers are the same or similar as pictured above, I think. http://cdtstore.com/6x9_series/cl69sub_cf.htm I found a lab sample from for $99 from the manufacturer.
I'm using a JL Audio 360/4 amplifier that I already had. I have used free airs like these before and they are awesome. I am slightly concerned about them being placed in the side panels, as they will vibrate a lot. When used in the rear panels of a car with a rear deck, they utilize the trunk as a box and are superb for their size.
@jzwhap: I am not doing install myself, I'm having it done at a local shop. Whatever is the best way is the way I will have them do it. I imagine they will hook it up just like the current 6x9s, just use new wires, I suppose. I'm hoping the amp can be installed discreetly.
Can an amp be installed on the opposite side of the car in the rear, I wonder?

From what I'm seeing, most 6x9s have a mounting depth of 3.5 inches, so despite the large magnet, if the OEM 6x9 speakers in the mini are of the common dimensions for 6x9, these should fit.
I found the OEM speakers for sale but cannot discern the mounting depth for them.

plz post pics and ur opinion of ur install...I had done this before with an 09 MCS, but I used a Rockford Fosgate full range 6x9 with a very low FR. it came out great. if the numbers that the cdt 6x9 are showing, it should sound much better with thundering bass. Good luck on ur install. 260 is better than 1200
I had speakers, likely the same model as these, and had them installed in a Grand Marquis in the rear panel. They were phenomenal. The JL amp, when bridged, will have plenty of power for these speakers.
I am having work done next Saturday.

did they fit?
Well they are subs, just 6x9 in size they fit perfectly of course. You must power the 6x9 subs sufficiently, they are not efficient speakers.
The 6x9s put out a lot of bass, but a 12" would obviously be more effective, that I knew all along, but this is the route I decided to go.
My big issue now is the computer needs recoded as a result of my aftermarket amp or I have to reinstall the HK amp to make the computer right. It's a real aggravation, but I'm working in a solution.
Actually, in retrospect, if I did it all over again, I would skip the sub altogether and just replace the amp with a 6 channel amp ($334 on Amazon), losing the tweets in the rear and replace the 6X9s in the rear with a better full range speaker.
Subs are nice, but the real issue is cleaning up the front with a clean unadulterated signal. The way Harmon Kardon tuned the amp is criminal.
