Map update

My car is 4 months away from being a year old. Did anyone hear of a map update for the 2011 and up cars with the new system?

I'm wondering the same thing. My original maps are very out of date. The dealership has not been able to answer this question either.

I don't think anyone has an answer. Last year one guy said his dealer told him updates were free and updated automatically. I doubt that.

Let me get this straight: you pay $2200 (plus tax) for the Nav, probably with maps that are a year or 2 old, then another $200 for an update? I knew there was a reason I use GoogleMaps on my phone. Did they ever fix the horrible point of interest search feature on the Nav?

That really don't help the 2011 and 2012 people since it just says see the dealer. The problem is they don't know. 2011 and 2012 cars use a different system. You do not get a map on DVD. The map is stored into the car by a usb port. I will call my dealer and see if they know anything new?

Another attempt

I have called 866-ASK-MINI once again.

They do not know the answer. They are calling my service manager at my local dealership. They, in turn, are to call someone inside on Mini to get the answer.

My fear is the answer is "there is no update available yet". What really frustrates me is that the original maps in my Mini were a good 3 years old.

What also frustrates me is that no one seems to know the answer. BMW/Mini has never supported their technology very well.

meh.

I just contacted my dealer and they talked to the parts department. I was told for the cars that need a download there is no 2012 update yet. Those cars should have the most current up to date software. It would seem odd that a car that is being made today still has the software that is over a year old.

And if it is the same data as I have in mine, it will be almost 4 years old, in a brand new car made today.

There is a 2012 version of the "BMW Road Map Europa", but US is still in 2011. Bear in mind, the actual map data used in these "2012" branded maps may actually date from 2010.

I believe you can still update CIC systems with a dvd (Road Map Move vs. Road Map Professional) but it will require a key to do so. Older systems need only changing the DVD (which does not have to be original )

I also saw this at the bottom of the page:

TomTom is an Authorized Supplier of MINI Navigation Map Update Products.

Well, it does not seem like TomTom does it either.

My Service Manager just called and said it would be $477 to update my maps--$250 for a key and 1.5 hours of shop time.

Remember how NAV was only $700 more than Mini-Connected alone?

This does not make sense. I would call GhostBusters if I could.

I just got the 2012 Map discs and am not seeing a big difference from the 2011. Sure, it is Tom Tom now vs Tele Atlas but no GUI changes or display improvement. The one stand out difference I see is that there are more blue lines for creeks and rivers. I am glad my dealer is willing to allow a refund.

But darn DVD is stuck in drive and won't eject. Does anyone know how to get the DVD out? Eject button alone isn't doing the trick. I have tried with the car on, idled, off but key in and also no key fob and just ejecting. The map still reads well but this sure is annoying.

Any help is greatly appreciated?!!

Anyone know how to contact Mini beyond the 866 number?

This is about a non-DVD based nav and it's maps.

Thanks.

I had the process done. Took overnight. Updated the nav system software and maps and 17 other modules. The maps are more updated, but still out of date by a few years. It does give lane guidance now. Whole thing is rediculous!

Did it end up costing the 477 you thought it would?

It would have, but I got it goodwilled. The part (map activation code was $218 cost but sells for $250). The allowed shop time is 1.5 hours. It was more like 8 hours.

If they don't improve the map itself, then I wouldn't bother. I just bought a 2012, after driving a '06 Prius with a Nav. Yeah, I bought the car because it's fun to drive. But once in a while I'd like to know what cross-streets are coming up. This Nav shows street names here and there, off in the distance, but the one coming up? The next intersection? The one I need to know? No.

I wonder who the manufacturer is. I hate the idea of sticking an after-market device on my nice new car. But unless I'm missing something, this is more a source of frustration than a useful feature.

The Nav is nicely integrated with the radio, etc. Make sure and turn the "arrow display" on as well and zoom in close. The 2012 map IS better, but still not up to date with come major construction projects that finished in 2008-9 in Houston. MiniUSA says it is NOT responsible if the maps are up to date or not since they get the data from another company (teleatlas?).

I love my car, but customer service sure does lack from MiniUSA. There really is NO excuse that the maps are not up to date. There really is NO excuse that you cannot update the maps yourself.

Even the cheapest third-party NAV system says street names and comes with either free or reasonable map updates, that are truly up-to-date.

May end up with a Lexus next time. All my friends get great customer service from them and the maps are up to date and can even be updated over the air.

I was just quoted 205.01 for a map update. I then asked if it included the install. They then emailed me and told me 125 to install it. They said they did not know that there was an install fee and that I was the first one that was asking for it to be done. I think I will be waiting at least another year.

I'd suggest everyone wait for 2013, at least.

I really wish that we as a community could be "heard" by those in power at MiniUSA and BMW. I'm getting a little cynical that "motoring" is just "marketing" because the manufacturer really doesn't care about you once they have your money.

meh

I agree. Not so easy to find any customer care number. I just got my 2012 Mini a couple weeks ago. I didn't buy it for it's gadgets, but since I have the nav, it's frustrating that the maps aren't current. My 2010 Acura TL had more current maps than my new Mini. Still a fun car

This a typical issue with in car nav systems. This is why I stopped getting them and went the Garmin route. $99 and you get lifetime updates to the maps, with new maps available every quarter.

And smart phones with Google maps work great too. I sent Google a map correction, and 2 days later the maps were updated. Gotta love that for being current.

As others have said, I would push for goodwill on the install at least.
