$10 DIY iPad2 Mount - Easy to make, removable and rock solid
Hey Guys,
Got done with a simple iPad mount for my mini that turned out better than I expected and thought I would share. Frustrated with trying out several different on the market iPad2 mounts for my Mini, I gave up and made my own.
Why I like it so much:
1) Removable in seconds
2) Compact size
3) Does not block my radio, a/c controls or switches.
4) Mounts in 3 different locations
5) $10 in parts and 1 hour of my time
6) Rock solid, no wiggle while driving or threat of my iPad falling off the windshield.
7) Fits my iPad portfolio case.

Here it is being painted.

Mounting points:
1) Above radio - Just slides into the area under the plastic dash and above the radio.
2) Between radio and A/C controls - I use this mounting point when I want to go vertical with the iPad. I had to take the a/c unit out to trim the 1/8 plastic lip of the top of the unit. You cant see the lip at all when installed but it blocks the legs from sliding in.
3) Between switches and A/C controls - works just fine here too.

Finished install.
Anyway, thought you guys with an iPad may want to see this. Works way better than any of the 4 mounting solutions I tried from buying off Amazon and returning them.
Happy Motoring,
Robert

I Use it for anything iPad but mostly for:
1) TomTom navigation app (stock navigation is so difficult to use and innacurate).
2) Pandora, Spotify and itunes
3) Texting and email (not while moving of course)
4) Yelp to find places to eat etc
5) Weather updates

I honestly don't know. I came up with this solution after I pulled the stereo out and the plastic dash off. Took a look and said I bet some thin metal could slide in between there and I got lucky. Try the same thing and give it a shot. The worst that happens is you learn some more about your car and spend 10 bucks.
I like it! Simple but effective. What did you make it out of? Your list says $10 bucks, but not what the rail the iPad sits in?

Everything is aluminum. Had some pieces laying around from a previous project.
Yeah, that would be great if you could make a small sketch or give us the dimensions.
That's definitely a really cool idea, but mainly applicable to those with the factory GPS or chrono package, which means the speedometer and tachometer are overtop the steering wheel. Maybe a mount to one side with a smaller 7" tablet. I do realize, though, it's more advantageous for you, as the last update I am aware of for the 1st-gen GPS came out in 2008.
