SIRIUS Plans: Full vs Family

For those of you who had Sirius on your Mini when you got it....

There are 2 plans offered. Full is like it says, full. You get all the channels, even the raunchy ones.

Family blocks out the raunchy channels.

Sirius will send you over the satellite one signal or the other, depending on what you choose.

My question is, I've ordered the Full Plan but am unable to get the raunchy channels. According to Sirius, Mini must have those blocked out on the HU. I will have to go to Mini to get my software upgraded to allow those channels.

Does this sound correct to anyone?

Mini has no right to regulate what type of things that you listen to, raunchy or not. It's just plain wrong. I would be calling Mini USA with this and I would not be nice about it either.

Let us know what they tell you if you decide to call.

There is much less content censoring on Sirius compared with regular AM/FM radio--I have no idea if the FCC will step in eventually or not--but for now, you can listen to the Hip Hop stations and get a whole lot more than you're used to on commercial radio. Pretty cool IMHO.

Oh, I got ya. I thought you meant raunchy like the Playboy channel that they have on XM.

Uhhhh.....

My SELF-INSTALLED OEM Sirius works beautifully, except:

My head unit will NOT pick up some of the risque Hip-Hop channels, the Comedy channel (slightly nasty), nor the gay channel.

These would be considered probably offensive to some Mini "family" type owners. It appeared from the Sirius camp that Mini had "blocked" these on the headunit (requiring prior permission from the owner) before they would set the head unit to play these.

I haven't talked to my Mini dealer yet (out of town), but one of 2 things is going on:

Mini has those channels blocked (software flash required to gain access) or,
My OEM unit is malfunctioning.

I would be interested in hearing what they say... I also have the Sirius and cannot get the Comedy channel and probably others. I will have to check my plan too just to make sure.

motoring,

Are you also using the OEM unit? This is kind of weird, eh?

Motoring,

Sorry, but good to hear it. I had figured if you had to flash the computer to get the rear fog lights to function (I still can't quite believe this), it would make sense that Mini has the "ugly" channels blocked out on the head unit to not offend anyone.

And if you can't get the comedy channel you are also missing TWO of the hip-hop channels and OutQ. You may not miss either of those but I enjoy the comedy channel on long drives.

Also, Sirius has just announced at CES in Las Vegas they are adding/changing their lineup (typically done at the beginning of the new year at the CES). They are splitting the comedy channel into TWO different channels. One "clean", and the other "not-so-clean". You still won't be able to get it.

I'll check with my dealer hopefully this weekend.

OK, got it fixed.

The radio is NOT locked out. It was a problem with Sirius. (Although why I talked to the Sirius tech folks THREE times and they were unable to fix it is beyond me).

Today I talked to someone in sales/activation. They sent a signal to my car audio to turn Sirius off. Once that was done, they sent a second signal to turn on the FULL plan. It worked.

Apparently the Full plan signal won't override the Family plan signal on the BMW/MINI audio. You have to deactivate, then reactivate with the desired signal plan. Or my radio is just funky.

Man it's been a while since I've been out here. Too busy I guess.

Thanks for the input. I will give Sirius a call today. Hopefully I can get mine fixed too. I would love to hear the new comedy station.
