Navteq no longer making/selling map DVDs

Just lifted off of the Navteq site:

MINI Navigation Map Updates
Thank you for your interest in purchasing a MINI Navigation Map Update. At this time, NAVTEQ® no longer produces or distributes map update DVDs and CDs for your vehicle. For more information on how to purchase as well as general questions regarding your MINI Navigation System, please contact your local authorized MINI Dealer. To find the MINI Dealer nearest you, please click here.

Now what? I've been waiting for an update for over a year and looks like it will never come....

BMW/MINI have switched their map supplier to TeleAtlas. I believe TeleAtlas supplies the maps for the hard drive based Nav system in newer BMWs. However it is not at all clear when/if they will provide updated maps for the older CD/DVD systems. From what I've seen in the forums, TeleAtlas currently doesn't even support the format used in the CD/DVD Nav systems.

There is a discussion here: http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/...n-goodbye.html

Sorry to say that I'm pessimistic. BMW doesn't have great incentive to pay TeleAtlas to create maps for older systems already out of production. The MINI 2010 refresh is expected to debut this week at the New York Auto Show, and I suspect it may include the hard drive based Nav now in BMWs. That will put us 1st gen owners even at even greater distance from the production Nav system.

There's hope

There are reports in the BMW forums that TeleAtlas just released 2010 map discs in the MKIII/MKIV "high" version also used by 1st gen MINI.

This is one of the reasons why my car was ordered without sat-nav. I knew support for updates wouldn't last as long as I was going to keep the car. With stand alone systems, you can just buy a new unit as technology advances, or at least companies like Garmin and Mio would be more apt to provide updated map firmware.

Is there a way to tell if they are truely updated or are they just rebranded NavTeq maps? I'm paranoid about buying something that I already have....

Might have answered my own question. According to the link that rkw posted, looks like they are new discs for 2010, released 2 weeks ago, although no version is listed.

I looked at the map update feature and found streets not on my version so I think they are at least updated compared to my cds.

Latest Nav Map Version

For those that have purchased the latest navigation map from MINI, what changes to the map's display have you noticed? Are the colors the same (too much black)? I really do not like the "night mode" look of the present nav map. I was hoping it would be similar to the first generation maps with lighter colors. Thanks.

Just got the new Nav disc. If you've been following the thread on the gen 2 nav forum, it is 2 discs now. Looks like more POIs and better listing categories of them. I'll probably install over the weekend and give a full report. Cheers!

Please do! Are the discs/POIs regional? Can't see swapping discs regularly. Looking forward to the report!

I noticed on the website for the mapupdates that for my year 2006 cooper s the update is called "MINI Coupe - Cooper S 2006 MINI - North American Map DVD - High Version". Is the "high version" for the DVD based navigation systems? My year was the last production model of the 1st generation mini's. I have not updated the map since I bought the car in 2006. I hope these new maps are updated to 2010? or at least late 2009? What do you guys propose? Should I purchase the new map from the Mini Navigation Map Updates site for $199?? I am not selling my mini EVER so I think it would be worth it.

I tried to write a review yesterday but the computer at work would not let me post. here's the highlights:

1. It's now a two disc set split in the midwest

2. POIs There probably are more of them but the categories set up the same to it's still tough to search for different stores, etc. Also i did a quick search for a grocery store that was put up 2 years ago and it was NOT listed. Not sure how long it takes places to get added.

3. Maps Not sure if they added a ton of new roads. Not building too much near me. I noticed on the commute yesterday that they added some route names to perspective view but that was it for me

4. Routing Here is where i noticed the biggest difference. It was different. Not better or worse. For some sections of the commute that were quick route in old 2006.2 disc, they were short route in new disc and vice versa. Will keep you you posted on what I notice elsewhere.

5. Bottom Line: Would i upgrade from 2006.2 disc? Maybe. There doesn't appear to be that big a change in POIs which is what I was hoping for. Can't tell about the maps. Interface is the same. The call is yours.

Yes, "High" is the correct version for the 1st gen.

My 2006 R52 came with the 2005.2 disc and I currently have 2009.1. The POIs on both are badly out of date. There are gas stations listed that disappeared 10 years ago. But those are Navteq discs and we'll have to see whether TeleAtlas does any better. In my local area, road changes have mostly been highway interchange and ramp reconfigurations, and those updates were in the new maps.

Ok, so i went on a road trip to connecticut this weekend and I have to say that I was not too impressed with the new nav disc. The "quick" route was taking me miles out of the way, through towns instead of highways. It seemed like every time I reset it by ending and starting the guidance, a new and different route was planned. Twice it went nuts and couldn't figure out where I was. "hello british lady, i'm in the middle of town or on the highway (BTW not reconstructed)"

It did find some POIs that we not in the old 2006.2 disc.

Now the dilemma is to choose the better mapping disc or the better POI disc....

I just installed the 2010 disc... The screen now shows: District #, State, City with the city only having the first 2 letters showing. Aside from being very annoying it looks like I live in District 9!

Any idea how to get rid of the district?
