Navigation & Audio AUX Drops in and out without notice- HELP!
Navigation & AudioBring your GPS and favorite CD or MP3. This is where navigation and audio options for the Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs are discussed.
I have a 2006 Mini S with nav and HK audio. I installed the AUX system following this post . It worked perfect until it would "Magically" drop off. I don't know why it would happen. I would try to toggle back to AUX on the system but it wouldn't show up. It will just randomly will "reactivate" itself, and the AUX connection will work. Can someone help me? Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks for the help, I am going to purchase it and see if that is the problem. I normally use my iPhone to connect to the aux, could that be the problem? I have a regular iPod I could use instead, that might stop the dropping off??
The issue has to do with connecting a device to aux and power (cigarette lighter) at the same time. If the problem goes away when run your iPhone from only its battery, then the ground loop isolator is the solution for using the cigarette lighter.
If you don't use the cigarette lighter and still have this issue, the problem is something else.
I believe my issue is that the actual connection inside is loose. I have used the cigarette lighter for powering the GPS at the same time and have never had any issues while using both.
Each device has different electrical characteristics that may or may not trigger this problem. Try your iPhone (or whatever you have a problem with) without connecting to the cigarette lighter and see if the problem goes away. If it works, get a ground loop isolator.
I just bought my Mini. An '04, and have the same problem. The music will play anywhere between 5 to 10 minutes and then the AUX is completely gone. Tried both the iPhone and iPod - same problem.
Just had this exact problem and it was fixed at the local dealer. They replaced the wiring from the stereo to the plug in my glove box and.....FIXED!!!

Replacement is necessary if the cable is defective, but the ground loop issue is more common and insidious. It can happen even with a good cable and replacement might not help. As Eric posted earlier, do a forum search on ground loop isolator or gli. It is a common problem and has come up many times.
If your aux drops in and out, verify whether the problem still happens even while not plugged into power. If the problem stops happening, a ground loop isolator will probably fix it. If it still happens, the cable or connector may be defective.
