OEM stereo randomly turns on then wont turn off

So for the past month now my 2006 MC convertible OEM stereo (NOT HK) has been sporadically turning on when the car is off. It only happens when the car is off and the key is out of the ignition. During normal driving no problems with it turning off after 20 minutes. Occasionally after the keys are out of the car the radio will turn on and won't turn off when you push any buttons! (when it does this it won't let you change modes to CD or AM, etc). The fuses don't appear to be blown (F10 and F27 both intact). I'm not sure what the problem is apart from it being possessed by the devil or gremlins.

I appreciate any thoughts on what the problem might be.

THANKS...

I'd say start w/ a new HU - less than $100 and worth the piece of mind/troubleshooting.

Yup...I bet some moisture got to it...and corroded the circuity board.

The other possibility is that you have a gremlin living inside your dash....and he disconnects the ***** at random times, and turns the radio on from inside!! Then when he gets a head-ache, he turns it off, and reconnects the *****!!

Factory radio's show up for sale pretty commonly....just remember that the early radio's....the 02' mostly don't have all the features and capabilities of the later ones....and I'm not sure, but the ability to read MP3's came out later....I have an early 05' and I can do MP3's, and have a Satellite radio attached, all work fine.

Just wanted to close this out for anyone who has the same issues - I replaced the receiver. It seemed to be the root problem.

A seven year update, well done! Too many threads are left hanging. What made you think of this?

My mini was actually parked in my garage for the last 3-4 years waiting on repairs (long story). After loads of new sensors and a new clutch she's back on the road now (which means I'm back looking at what I can mod and poking around NAM). I can't tell you how much I've missed driving a mini!
