Navigation & Audio For those with HIFI who replaced their speakers
For those with HIFI who replaced their speakers
Just wondering what speakers everyone went with. I have seen this information scattered around in various posts and thought it would help to get this in one place.
So, for those with the HiFi who replaced their speakers: What speakers did you get and did you add an amp?
Thanks

First used the following speakers with the HIFI amp:
Infinity Kappa 693.7i 6"x9" 3-way car speakers
Infinity Kappa 60.7cs 6-1/2" component speaker system
Infinity Kappa 42.7i 4" 2-way car speakers (didn't connect the tweeters)
Added a Boss Bass600 sub to fill in missing bass.
Sound was too bright (harsh) for my taste. So, went with the following:
Q 450.4 - Image Dynamics 4-Channel 450 Watt Amplifier
CXS64 V.2 - Image Dynamics 6.5" 4 ohm Component System
CTX69 - Image Dynamics 6 x 9" 2 Way Speaker w/ Silk Tweeters
Still using the Bass600.
I'm very happy with this sound system. While the Kapas provided more clarity than the stock HIFI speakers, the Image Dynamics system produces a very noticeable improvement in clarity over the Kappas. Sound is smooth and full.

I decided on the Focal 165 VR3s. Will post impressions once done with the install. I am hoping I can do this next week.
For those who also replaced their fronts (who have Hi-fi) please post their results. Seems like a great way to help other people who are looking to do the same

Actually I am for now. Seems that most people who add an amp do so for volume reasons. I don't like listening to music at high volumes, so I wanted to try with just the stock Hi-Fi amp first before spending any extra money and time adding an amp.

Before you replace your Hi-fi speakers, you might read through this post and try it first.

How are you planning on handling the crossovers?
1. To bypass the odd signal processing and/or filtering in the HIFI amp.
2. Improve sound quality. A high quality powerful amp will improve sound quality. I've found this to have very noticeable effect when upgrading amps in my home system.
However, I believe the upper speaker gets full range. So, you might want to try using the crossover for the 4" speaker. If you are mounting the tweeter in the door, you could use it for that as well.
If you are putting the tweeter in the A-pillar, it think there is already a high pass filter in that wiring.
I didn't add an amp for volume. I don't like loud volume either. I had two reasons:

There is already some filtering done in the HIFI amp, so you probably don't want to add crossovers on top of it, at least in some places. The lower 6.5" speaker seems to get mostly bass.
