Will an IPod charge when the car is turned off?

I know there are a million threads but I just could not find this answer. When I turn my 2009 Clubman S off (completely) The Ipod still shows (Connected).

Does that mean I can leave it attatched and it will stay charging overnight?

Anyone know the answer?

Thanks,

Claus

I'd expect it turns off after about half an hour.

From the research I did and the quick test, the second the key goes off the power supply through the usb port is cut off. The ipod however can and will stay on and may possibly discharge overnight!

Thanks, Is there any way to turn the Ipod off while still connected? I'm afraid the connector will be shot after one year of connecting and disconnecting every day.

All iPods cut off (go into standby) automatically after a few moments of not being used (inactivity). There is no need to disconnect it and it won't drain (battery leak) any more plunged into the USB than it would unplugged.

I have had both the R53 and the R56 OEM iPod adapters in cars that I have owned. I have not had an issue with the iPod becoming discharged over night and with the extra charge time in driving to and from work etc have been able to pull the iPod off to go to the gym etc. You should have no issues with it being hooked up in fact I never used the OFF position on the iPod while it was attached to either car.

TheMadDane,

All of what has been posted below may or may not be correct for your specific car. I have an 08 that is fully loaded (except NAV) and the USB port remains powered at all times. But a friend has a 08 Clubman that is not fully loaded and his USB Port remains powered for the approximately 30 minutes before the car electronics put them selves to sleep. Another friend has an 09 and it stays on for the 30 minutes. This has been a discussion for a long time and it depends on the compliment of electronics in the cars as to what happens. That is probably why you did not find a definitive answer.

I know I burned out the battery on my iPod leaving it connected to the car continuously.

As for the connector being shot after a year of plugging and unplugging - Although possible you really should not have a problem both my nieces use there iPods every day and plug an unplug them multiple times a day with no problem for more than two years. Now that is not to say that you will not have a problem but it really should not be if it is done properly.

from my experience if I leave my ipod plugged into the usb with the engine off (while I'm parked at work or at home), the battery life slowly drains out if left plugged in.
