R56 Sat nav firmware upgrade?
Hi
I purchased a 2007 used Cooper S auto with MINI sat nav built in. The DVD map provided was 2007.
I am thinking of buying the new 2009 DVD maps. However I do have a couple of questions:
1) Do I need to update the firmware in the sat nav in order to use the 2009 maps?
2) I found this link: http://www.xoutpost.com which provides the firmware. Is this applicable to the R56 sat nav?
Thanks

Does your voice activation work? My 2007 MCS needed a software update from the dealer to fix voice activation. It was available in late 2007, IIRC. Otherwise, I haven't heard of any other updates.
I'm still using the 2007 DVD. If the roads you navigate haven't changed much, you may not need to spend the $$.

I suggest that you simply use the 2007 disc and see how well it works for the areas you travel in. Even if your local roads have changed, Navteq is slow to update their data (many years behind in some areas) and you might not gain benefit from a newer disc. You can always get a newer disc whenever you decide to.
According to the Navteq website, the newest MINI disc is 2009.1 released in March 2008.
That website does not correctly identify the Professional disc need for a 2007 hardtop. It lists the High version which is used by the 2007 convertible. They've been told of this error, but haven't fixed it yet.
I have a big problem spending $200 for a disc containing 99% of the same data as my older disc, plus a small amout of updated material. If they charged a reasonable amout, say $50 or less, I think a lot more people would update every year or two.

You can see many different version numbers and other diagnostics on a hidden OSD screen (no idea if this works on cars past the 07 model year).

My car was recently in for a couple warranty issues. They must have updated the Nav software from the original (Aug 07 build) version. Only reason I noticed is the HD radio display is slightly different. The Nav itself and poor POI search function is still just like it was prior to the change.
I've come across many roads that are displayed on the Nav display, but when traveling a route on them it says they are "not digitized" and it can't provide directions. Even though it displays the blue route line on these non-digitized roads. It would be nice if Navteq had a map display on their site which let you zoom into areas to check the detail. Similar to what Garmin has on their site.

Witch is the last version number?
Same pics from my JCW (11/2008 - EU Version)
I took a bunch of pictures too, let me know if you want to see them. My system version says CP1_b7802_r56.
What I find curious is that there's a "telephone" option but mine doesn't have the telephone hookup. Also do you have Satellite radio? I'm assuming that's what the little antenna looking icon is next to your clock?

Make sure you go 15 seconds. 14 and it doesn't work. Also I seem to have more luck when I had the home screen selection on Setup instead of the top one, Navigation.
My guess is its the same its just a pain to get to. No joke, took me like 10 tries. I found it's best if you go to the home screen and bump it down to "setup" to start, seemed to work best for me.
