Just got an iPhone 3g and I did a lot of reading here last night

I was surprised to find that my car cables did not work for my new g3, so I started searching the forum for solutions. I think that I've narrowed myself down to two choices:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS...mco=MjIwMTg2NQ

http://www.amazon.com/I109Blk-Cigare.../dp/B000M5BNSQ

So I think that these two tools should give me charging and playing power in my car. Am I correct? I'm almost ready to hit the order button, but I want to make sure before I click.

Thanks a lot!

i dont believe u need the passPort product from apple, i just picked my mini up last night and in preperation for useing my 3G with it i bought a Belkin USB/cigaret addapter, the same idea u are linking from Amazon, then i simply hooked my iPhone charging cable into the USB and iPhone and my phone started charging right away. i think the PassPort is more if you have the Media package for the Mini that hooks into the bottom.

Im my case i dont have the package so i plug the charger into the lighter and bought a 3.5mm jack to plug the headphone port into the mini.

I hope this helps some! good luck!

sorry i posted the wromg link! my bad!

I still want the Cigarette Lighter Adapter With Usb Output because that will power my ipod, then I think I want https://www.sendstation.com/us/produ...neout-usb.html

because I can connect my aux out line to the dock, which should give better sound quality.

I'm not sure if you have the USB connection, but if you don't, I would recommend getting this Griffin product that works with the 3G for sure. It also has FWD/REV and Play functions.

Do you not have the Bluetooth/iPod USB connection? If you don't, you could do what I did and mount an Apple iPhone 3G Dock (or Universal Dock) and a Griffin PowerJolt V2 Car Charger.

I bought and returned the iTrip Auto Pilot with SmartScan for use in our other vehicle ('06 Murano SE). I was back-and-forth with Griffin tech support (who were very friendly by-the-way), but in the end I will await an official 3G-compatible product. My reasons:

1) It did not reliably charge the iPhone 3G
2) On two occasions I got the "this accessory does not work with the iPhone" warning
3) The sound is noticeably "thinner" than with an original iTrip Auto (circa '05/'06) and 5G iPod with video
4) The SmartScan never chose good stations - some even had stations play thru when the iPod was off
5) The amount of static was horrible. Probably related to #4. On my old iTrip Auto, I always used to use 107.9 as an old stand-by. The same frequency on the new unit never came in clean/clear
6) The RDS artist/song info was jumbled. I realize it may be a limitation of the particular car's head unit, but our experience in the Murano was that this feature could only display 8 characters (including spaces) at a time, and the subsequent 8 characters may not be the right ones (e.g. if an artist and song title spanned 4 blocks of 8 characters, it might play the first block followed by the third or fourth block...)

According to iLounge.com, Griffin has recently (late '08) released a new iTrip Auto that is specifically designed to work with the iPhone 3G. The iTrip Auto Pilot that I returned had a "Works with iPhone" label on the box, but the fine print only named "iPhone" (and not iPhone 3G) on the list of compatible products.

I suspect all the talk around here about max voltage thru USB, etc. affects the current crop of accessories, and there will be a new batch of products that will react to the change.

Although the link I posted says FM transmitter, it does not have an FM modulator. I use the Aux out which is a line level output from the iPhone which is the highest quality signal you can get from the iPhone (it doesn't touch the 3.5mm jack on the iPhone, it gets the signal from the 30 pin connector).

However, it does pop up the "This accessory doesn't work with iPhone" but I always just ignore it and it has reliably charged my iPhone so far.

This looks like a cool option if you don't like the headphone jack.

If you have the iPod integration with the car, I would have ordered the Scosche adapter to allow the iPhone 3G to charge. This also works with the new Nanos, also. Just my two cents.
