iPod Touch

Who here has an Ipod Touch and how does it compare to the Iphone? I was thinking of getting an 8GB touch and wanted to know what the differences are compared to the iphone other than no phone, camera, or internet unless on Wifi. I would do an iphone but will never justify spending $80 a month for one phone service.

I have my 30gb ipod which has about 11 gigs of music on it but probably 5 or 6gb is music I never listen to so I think 8gb should be fine.

How is the personal planner/scheduler software on the touch? That is something I really need.

Thanks,
k

I have both. Loooong story.

There's no speaker. iPhone has one.

The applications are nice. iTouch can use many of them, just won't fully leverage stuff that benefits from the data plan of the iPhone or the fake geo-location capabilities of the iPhone.

Other than that, yeah, it's nice. PDA on steroids.

I just recently sold my 16 GB iPod Touch when I got the new 3G iPhone, so I'm pretty familiar with both.

Like you said, the Touch is basically the iPhone without the phone, camera, GPS, and internet access (unless you're connected to Wi-Fi). There are no built-in speakers with the Touch, either, so you have to use headphones or external speakers to play music. Other than that, the interface looks and feels just the same. The Touch is also a bit thinner than the iPhone.

The calendar application is very good, if you already have a Mac and use Apple's iCal software. If you use something like Outlook for your calendar program, I'm afraid I don't know how easy it is to interface your Outlook calendar with the Touch.

One nice thing is that since the new 2.0 version of the iPod Touch software supports adding third-party applications from the iTunes App store, you have a huge variety of personal productivity software that you can add to the Touch. It's much better than when the Touch first came out and you were stuck with the software that came on it (and it didn't even come with all the same applications as the iPhone).

Oh, and it integrates well with the Google stuff -- gmail, gcal, etc. If there's Wifi, it all flows pretty effortlessly.

And yes, unlocking is awesome. Makes a nice difference.

I have one. I like it, and while I don't use it a ton, it's pretty sweet. There's no speaker as the above poster said and there's no vibration or bluetooth either. Go play with one at a nearby electronics store to get a feel for it.

As for planner/scheduler, there's the built-in calendar app and probably a bunch more in the App Store or maybe some for jailbroken ipods.

Also the "Dynolicious" software for Dyno and Skid pad simulation works great on the "Touch"

I have been a pda user for a long time, began with the old palm pilot. I bought an itouch about 6 months ago. It is a pretty cool media player but as a pda still has a long way to go. Before the 2.0 came out it was pretty basic. The new software that is coming out has potential but still has a long way to go. Give it a year to catch up with the Blackberry/PalmOS/Windows mobile stuff.

The built-in calendar is pretty good. Google calendar is OK but adding an event to your google calendar from the itouch is pretty weak.

I am liking the itouch more and more and I think it has great potential, but it has a long way to go.

I have a touch, and I will have to say that I love it. I hope that it is a gateway device for apple, and that we will see a tablet in the near future. Because really its only limitation is the size. I use mine all the time. I would wait however till September 9th, rumor is that the touch will get a refresh and possibly built in GPS. that's a rumor... so don't quote me, but I would wait.

No speakers!? Bummer! Looks like I'm stuck with the iPhone. I still hope they'll produce a different version of the Touch. I still won't buy an iPhone because I always have bad luck with smartphones. My first was a Blackberry 7100. It froze up after one month and I was forced to send it back. They sent me a refurbished one with a scratched screen! (T-Mobile, you stink!). The second phone I had was a HTC Wizard. It broke down completely after 20 months. I'm back to a refurbished Blackberry.

Go to the Apple site and check out the new iPod Touch that was announced on Tuesday.

There's now a built-in speaker and external volume controls, along with a slimmer profile and a pretty significant price drop.

(Still no GPS, though)
