its easy to do yourself. I know it is rated at on hour of labor. So you will be charged 35 plus labor. I know if you buy it from a dealer the actual price is 39.95 plus tax. I just bought mine for my 2006 mini and did the install in about an hour. Go out and buy the bently's manual for the mini. Its the best thing I have invested in. If you need advice on the install i can help.

i installed mine a few days ago by myself. i put the aux plug where the blank toggle switch is... question is i had to bend the wire a bit to get it to fit in there. when i tried using it, only the left side of my speakers have sound, the right doesn't. have you guys experience that before?

Really easy

This is a really easy install

here's the factory installation inst http://www.minimania.com/pdfile/NMI7647_INSTR.pdf

You can put the jack 'anywhere'

and after reading the instructions and doin' a little finger pokin' many are able to get the connector in the correct place on the back of the radio w/out needing to pull the radio out.

Seek out BA on SunshineMinis.org .. I know he just put his in.

It was so easy I cant see why anyone would have a dealer install it, only time needed was for drilling the holes for the face plate.

A question. It says in the booklet for the radio that you press the mode button to switch to AUX. Does that only switch to that position if you have a changer or the AUX kit installed? I pressde the button and it only switches between CD and the radio function such as FM.

Thanks

yes, the six function only appears if the six is plugged to the back. The install is really simple. Read the instructions and you shouldn't have problems.

If only one channel of audio is being heard, then it's likely that one of the wires disconnected from either the jack or at the connector on the radio. If you have both channels working when listening to the radio or a CD, then this is likely the problem.
I would think it would be at the AUX connector itself; you may need to resolder a loose wire. Just a thought. Good luck.

i've tried two different sets of new aux wires but with the same results. i guess the final reason would be the head unit itself; i purchased it used from ebay. go figure.

i dunno about buying an aux port from the dealer or the net. lets just say 40 dollars for wires. I made my own found directions on the net. I used the correct resistors, my first install had a whinning noise so deconstructed and found out i burnt out a resistor, fixed it and put it all back together and now works flawlessly. its been in the car for 4 months now with no problems.

sure you can roll your own..

but the factory unit comes all together, and with the pins for the factory connector...

If you've only got one channel working, check the pins that you've hooked to. The NAV audio goes in the same connector, and it is Mono only. Same with the phone connector... Also, check that the pins aren't bent on the head unit.

I had a pretty easy time with it and I am not experienced with this sort of task. I did mine just like the link below shows:

highlights:
- tug a bit on the panel below the steering wheel in order to get it to pivot down.
- then reach in and plug the kit provided cable in to the head unit (with this procedure you do not have to remove the head unit)
- feed the rest of the cable down so the connection would be in the plastic panel behind the toggle switches (or where ever you are going to place the "Auxillary Input" metal panel that your Ipod / MP3 player will plug into).
- a little drill effort to make / align holes to mount the kit provided "Auxillary Input" metal panel to that plastic panel (or where ever)

Here is the link to some very detailed instructions (and good pictures) that I used for reference:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?faq=faq_interior#faq_faq_aux_input

Note you are not able to change Ipod / MP3 player tracks via your steering wheel controls or on your head unit with this set up - plus all you will see in your head unit's display is "AUX". Those capabilities are on the more expensive I Pod® Adapter Interface(s).

I have a retractable cable (which is not provided with the kit) between my Ipod and the "Auxillary Input" plug. I stow my Shuffle in one of the forward cup holders. When needed (and when it is safe to do so) - I reach down and pull my Ipod up to change tracks, turn it off / on and such. It works great for me!

Also be sure, after you have hooked things up, that you go through your head unit's sound level options (Bass, Treble, etc) and turn up the AUX volume (I have mine set at the highest level).

and see if that one gives you both channels. IF yes, it's the head unit. If no, back to square one.

Through a real mess, I had 2 MINIs in less than 6 weeks. The '02 was an MC and the other is an '03 MCS. I bought the AUX port from MINI for less than 40 bucks.

It did not work in the '02 (June manufacture) but did in the '03. It took 5 minutes to install when I moved the Euro-shelf to the '03.

Do it yourself. I am 6'1" and 220 and have larger than average hands (no one will be sitting in the back seat when I drive :-) ) I had no problem fishing it into the AUX port normally for the CD.

BTW, I decided to drill the insert (where you would put the on/off switch for driving lights) for the AUX input plug and am very happy with it. later if I put in a switch, I will relocate it.
