iPod Not Recognized

My first post to this great community - you helped me while away the hours while I waited for my great little car to arrive.

And now she's here and I've run into a bit of a snag. The stereo won't recognize my iPod. I go to the AUX settings and the iPod doesn't show up, while all the iPod shows is the check mark and the disconnect message. Granted, it is a 3rd generation iPod, but I was under the impression this should work. My iPod hook up is the standard AUX OEM set up that I ordered and I understand that the head unit is an Alpine.

I do know that my iPod will work with an Alpine head unit since that was the set up in my previous car, but of course it was a different version. When I picked up my car, my MA hooked up his iPod Nano and it worked just fine. Don't get me wrong, if I need a new iPod to make this work, I can probably find the joy in that, but I'd love my current one to work.

Thanks for the advice and assistance.

Is your iPod hooked into the aux input/usb or with the factory iPod adapter?

Through the adaptor that they gave me that connects to the AUX/USB.

I am in the process of backing up my iPod and setting it back to the factory settings. I've read in other places that this may be a resolution with the issue being tied to the upgrade of iTunes. I figure anything is worth a try!

Let us know if reseting it fixes it. Good luck!

Thanks for the good thoughts, unfortunately, the reset did not work. Back to the drawing board!

Are you plugging the USB in before or after you start up the car?

I have no experience with the 2008 Bluetooth USB, but I've seen computer USB items that needed to be hot plugged to get the computer to see it.

Good question. I've done both plugging in before and after start up and hooking up the iPod before and after start up and neither makes any difference.

Have you tried a USB memory stick in your car? *Maybe it didn't get the required programming for it to work. *Or if you have access to another iPod to try.

Yes, I can use a USB flash drive and have tried that. I works as a make due measure. My MA tried his newer Nano when I picked up my car and it worked.

I have done some searching out on the Apple site and found information about the BMW AUX connection (making a bit of an assumption here that it one in the same thing for my MC) and according to that doco, any iPod should work with the latest software. On the other hand, I've also read in other unofficial places that upgrading to iTunes 7 has caused some people issues. I also understand that the head unit is an Alpine (please correct me if I'm wrong) and in my previous car, I ran an Alpine head unit that interfaced just fine with my iPod.

I suppose that there could be an issue where there is a bit of programming missing, however, I kind of was under the impression that this was more of hooking up cables scenario. And since my MA's nano worked that would imply that the cabling is fine. Taking that one step further, it would imply that my iPod and my husband's matching iPod are really the issue.

Ah, the tangled web of technology

Ive got a ipod 4gig mini and its connected with the aux input/usb
it was working fine last week, and because i needed to I restored my ipod to factory settings (it had a lot of garbage on it)

now it doesnt work :P

I cant even find how to set up the play lists if thats the issue (if its the same as my 05 MINI_play1, MINI_play2 and so on)
Am I overlooking it in the manual or is there something Im missing? On a side note I do have itunes 7

I've been meaning to put out a new post on this and list what I've done, where my issue stands and what comes next.

I have:

- Reset my ipod to factory settings on both a Mac and a PC (there were some items on the web that suggested that an ipod formatted on a Mac could be problematic)
- Changed playlist names (although the format you listed I haven't tried, so there's still hope)
- Researched how to fall back to a prior software release (no luck there)

Nothing has worked. I did try my ipod with a different Alpine head unit - it matches what I had in my previous car. And low and behold, my ipod worked. So, now I'm back to thinking the problem is with my Mini. I have an appointment to take her in on the 21st to get my real time traffic fixed and to have them look at this problem as well.

Your issue could be related to posts that I have read in other places where people found that iTunes 7 caused their ipods to stop working with their AUX/USB. Sorry that I can't help more than that. If I find out anything more on Monday, I'll be sure to share.

yeah I am ticked at myself for resetting the ipod from the start i wouldnt have had this issue but blah. Ive tried going back and that is a no go...

along with the previous play lists ive tried I can add MINI-go to the list and the ipod acts like its connected but does not play (argh!!)

I think this is a PERFECT excuse to go buy a new ipod....ive been wanting a bigger one anyways keep us posted...In the meantime im still going through my cryptic owners manual and the vague radio operating instruction manual looking for _something_

The new ipod has crossed my mind as well, but I'm afraid to drop that kind of change for something new and find out that it doesn't work either. It would certainly tell me something, but I'd hate to learn that hard lesson.

If you make any progress on your issue, please post an update. I'd love to hear some good news, even if it isn't mine.

For people with 3G Ipod, stop trying it will not work. It is stated in the Miniusa website.

Hey Wednesday. I think we were on the same boat from England!
That's a nice looking clubman!

Thanks for the post. Can you point me to where it says this about the 3G's? Please don't take this as doubting your word - I just can't believe I was so silly to miss it in such an obvious place. And of course my ipod is a 3G:-(

On the upside, I can see a pretty shiny new ipod in my future!
