Are you going to AMVIV?

SDMike and I have a screaming JL Audio 10W3V3 with an Alpine MRD-M300 Amp; currently in a custom enclosed box.

$250 and the set-up is yours - live "demo" available at AMVIV (since SDMike runs the same in his MINI).

No shipping...it's big, it's heavy, and I don't want to mess with it.

Too bad this didn't come together last week...we would have had MDK (Matt) carry this home on the plane with him!!!

Twister, someone reported that they took their car in for a software update. They had removed the stock amp that comes with the hi-fi system. The software update couldn't be applied due to it not "see-ing" the stock amp in there. Make sure you leave the stock amp in, even if you abandon it and run new wiring and amps.

You'll also find some threads here about how some people have used the rear channels to feed an amp to power a sub. It has been reported that the rear's don't get full range. More low frequencies are given to the door speakers. I don't remember if it was ever determined if the stock amp has the crossovers built in or the head unit was limiting the freq response of the rear speakers.

I can't really give you any good tips as I've left my hi-fi system alone so far. Keep us posted when you figure out how to handle it.

Sub and amp came yesterday. Sub is Earthquake SWS 12", Amp is Phoenix Gold Tantrum 400.4

Now I just need some help getting this configured in the box and in the R56.

The only speakers that seem to be getting full bass are the 6" in the doors.

Regarding the removal of the HIFI amp in the rear, there have been conflicting reports. One dealer is said to have refused to fix a DSC error alert because a software update couldn't be performed without the HIFI am in place. Another report claims that a dealer did such an update with a missing amp. There have been many theoretical arguments about it, but this is the internet. You should talk to your dealer about it before replacing the amp.

It has also been said that connecting something to the amp incorrectly can trash the electronics of the OBC, costing thou$ands. If you do it yourself, make sure you really know what you are doing. If you have a shop do it, make sure they know R56 MINIs, and that they take full responsibility for any damage they do.

Robin,
I was hoping you would chime in. I've read everything on this site and you seem to be on every thread concerning sub Q&A. Thanks for your input.

I don't think I'll be removing the HiFi amp. From what I keep reading, I'll just be tapping off the speaker output. (Or the shop I pick will.) I just want some THUMP in the boot.

Kevin at RoadsterSound is helping with the parts and rear boot box. I don't even have the R56 yet. Just getting my ducks in a row.

I haven't installed an amp, but tapping into the speaker line coming out of the amp seems to be what others have done. I think you are best off using the line going to the 6" front speakers.
