New Speakers..Oh SH@T!

So I just installed my polk audio 3.5" and 6.5" speakers and was testing them. Well I must have had one wired incorrectly, because I believe I blew a fuse. Now the problem is that I have checked every freakin fuse in the passenger fuse box, and none of them are blown. My question is, is there a fuse connected to the actual radio?

Here is a breakdown. I put the key in, everything looks good...no sound. I can switch from tuner to cd and the cd sounds like it's starting up, but no sound. I don't even get the entry beep. So where is this fuse?

PLEASE HELP, I HATE NOT HAVING MUSIC!!

speakers don't have a fuse. sounds like you have a wire shorted to ground - doublecheck your connections.

Alrighty then! I have installed speakers before, but this is the first time I've ever had a problem. So what your saying is that I just need to check all of my spliced wire connections, right? But let me ask you this, why wouldn't the rears play then? I haven't done them yet. Just trying to learn how to be a better installer! HAHA!

Some amps do have an internal fuse. Check your manual.

It's just the regular sound system, so I don't have an amp. And the speakers were on for about 30 seconds. Then they shut off. I am pretty sure that PGT is right. I will check it out later today or just work on it tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.

I think the stock system does have an amp.....anyone know this for sure?

Also I do believe there is a fuse on the back on the radio....

Both of these things could be complete lies lol....but you can't say i did not try! lol

Best of luck!

In any case, the thing to do is to pull out your DVM or scope, disconnect the speakers and see if the amp is putting out any kind of voltage. Then check the impedance of the speakers.

FORGIVE A FOOLISH QUESTION, BUT HOW MUCH DOES IT REALLY COST TO HAVE AN AUDIO SHOP INSTALL SPEAKERS ANYWAY? IF YOU BROUGHT YOUR POLKS TO AN AUDIO SHOP, YOU PROBABLY COULD HAVE DONE THIS PROPERLY FOR LESS THAN $100.

Yes, true! But I'm not the take it to the shop and have them do it type of guy. I like to learn how stuff works and how to "fix" stuff that doesn't. I just like the feeling of accomplishment when I get it right, instead of handing over $100+ for an install. That's just me though.

All fixed! I took the passenger side door apart again, and come to find out that the speaker connection wasn't getting a good contact. Tightened it up and it's all gravy now. Wow what a difference from stock! I can't wait to get the 6x9's in. It just sounds so crisp and so clean!

Glad you got it to work. It's good to hear that even just replacing the speakers makes a big difference in sound. The head units are becoming so intigrated into the dash, it's not looking good for aftermarket upgrades there.

Changing my fronts with JLs also made a tremendous difference. I find myself sitting in the car for a while after a park now, enjoying details I've never heard before in my favorite songs. The stock speakers are muddy.

After reading other threads, changing the rears might not make much of a difference unless you mess with new amps and wiring. The stock headunit doesn't seem to send much bass back there. Let the new fronts give you the clarity and fullness and the stock rears just to "fill" the soundstage, IMHO.

Well, I already have the 6x9s for the rears, so I will put them in. If they don't sound up to my expectations then I will get an amp to power them. By the way, I read somewhere about where people are mounting the crossovers for the 6.5s and now I can't find it. Anybody know or have input in that department?

IIRC, you'll find plenty of room for crossovers in the rear.

Yeah thanks! The problem I have is that I thought it seemed loke a great place for the crossovers, but the window seems to just touch it. So if there are any great ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks!
