My Zune installation (iPod people also welcome)
Hey guys, thought i would share my Zune installation, no big ugly dash mounts here... matter of fact you would never know its there otherwise..

Simple, clean and it holds really well. Thats velcro BTW, the hook side is on the top half of the ebrake handle, the loop half is on the back of the Zune.

if you wanna talk about safety, i dont think fumbling with an mp3 player in any position is a good idea... but if youre more interested in crapping on my thread for whatever reason, then, good job
Simple install that works perfectly. Nice job.

the soft part is on the zune b/c its in my hands/pocket more, and you really only ever touch the bottom half of the ebrake anyway (pulling up) so i hardly know the scratchy part exists

I love my Zune!

The previous owners of my car had a trunk AUX cable installed and the wire runs under my rear seat. The Zune Fits perfectly in my arm rest, So when I park the car; out of site, out of mind.

I made my decision based on 2 things:1. i think spinning my thumb in circles to get from the top of a list to the bottom is the stupidest idea ever..
2. i hate the fact that itunes hijacks your music and tells you what you can and cant do with it. not a big fan of software that dumbs everything down so much that it takes control away from the user.
so, since the ipod is the standard for mp3 players.. i say sheeple b/c people that bought a zune made a "choice" (price being equal)
iTunes doesn't add any DRM to songs you rip, so you can put the song in as many playlists as you want, burn as many copies as you want, and transfer it to as many iPods as you wish. You can take the file from your computer and transfer it to another computer or non-iPod music player, as well.
Now, most of the songs that you buy *from the iTunes Store* have DRM, but no one's forcing you to buy your music there. And even if you do, the DRM limitations are unobtrusive enough that it's not that big of a deal unless you're trying to do something illegal. You can store/play songs purchased from the iTunes Store on up to five different computers, an unlimited number of iPods, and you can burn them to disc, as long as you don't try to burn the *exact same playlist* more than seven times.
How do you feel about songs transferred from one Zune to another dying after three plays, whether the songs have DRM or not?
While it's true that some people buy an iPod because it's "the standard", don't forget that the reason it's the standard in the first place is that so many buyers *actively made the choice* to go with an iPod. You don't get a 75% share of a purely-luxury market like portable music players by having an inferior product.

'Interesting idea that, except the velcro will not be that secure in a couple of months of usage, I also think that the controls for the player are too far out of 'normal' reach and any glances at the players UI will mean a rather over-extended look away from the road, I presume from the pics that it also makes the Hand Brake a little more difficult to operate when you are sat at red traffic lights ?'
Attaching velcro to an iPod/Zen/Zune/Wallmart player etc, will give you exactly the same (poor) result, same basic size, same basic weight, same, same, same poor end result.
Meanwhile, your bashing of iPods will put you in something of a minority and selling the advantages of the Zune to a crowd that looks at the device as though it was 'yet another iPod clone' is futile, calling iPod users 'sheeple' is provocative, like you are trying to start and argument and/or troll.
yeah i thought about how long it would take for the velcro to wear out as well, but its cheap/easy to replace when/if it does. As for using the brake at red lights thats not something i usually do, but its doable you just gotta remember the mp3 player is there. Its more about having a place to put it thats accessible without being all up in your face on the dash or taking up space in the cupholder. Do you have an mp3 player in your car? what was your solution?
Can i somehow request that the mods change my title to remove the sheeple comment? Didnt mean to offend anyone, and i'm certainly not interested in debating which is the better mp3 player... i do have a life

My Zune 30GB Install
Instead of continuing the flame war between the Zune and
iPod, I'd though I'd post my Zune 30GB install.
But, before you put me in the Zune camp, I should inform
you that I'm also in the process of installing a Harman Kardon
Drive+Play for my iPod Nano alongside the Zune.
Anyway, my install uses the older (now discontinued) Zune
A/V dock. The dock just happens to fit perfectly onto the
rim of the standard MINI cup holder. It's then fed into the
MINI aux-input and charging is done through USB to the 12V.
Yes, I do lose the cup holder, but I don't allow drinks in my
MINI, so it's really not a problem for me (but if I really needed
it, the dock comes off in a jiffy).

(back to the flame war)
hey i thought about using the dock, but it seems like it would fall out pretty easy, especially the way i drive.
Heres a pic of the guts of my dock, just need to find/make an extension cable so i can wire that up under the dash and have one cable coming to the zune that charges/plays audio.

Nice! I wish I could get my Ipod Touch mounted like that.

Wow, passionate people and discussion over a simple device.
I have both an Ipod (which I have in my house) and Zune (Gen1.) which I wanted for my car and this thread has given me some information. It's nice to see some out there finally.
One thought though, shouldn't it be about personal preference and respect of it? Do we go bashing each other about our MINI's? Probably not....

In future, the best way to make this request is to report the first post using the Report Post icon (
). Don't be afraid to use it! It doesn't automatically mean you're reporting something "bad", it's great for requesting maintenance items too, including thread renames.
I've never felt the need to actually see what is playing on my iPod like others. I mean I loaded it, so I know what's on it. Not knowing precisely what song is next (set on shuffle) is like listening to the perfect radio station; no inane chat, no commercials, and all my favorite tunes.
It sits in a dock, in my glovebox, out of sight, and worked with the MFSW buttons.

I will probably get one of those DICE thingys at some point--but for now it doesn't really bother me a whole lot.
