No dealer trip is necessary - You can change this, here's how:
1. Turn Radio Off.
2. Turn Radio On.
3. Press and hold the "m" button for about 10 seconds.
4. Press < or > to navigate and + or - to change settings. May also need to press certain Preset buttons to change settings as well.
5. When you see GAL, this is your volume in motion settings in a range of CD1 for minimum and CD6 for maximum. Press the CD number you wish to use.
6. Turn radio off to exit.

I was searching the radio posts looking for a way to turn on the feature which lowers the volume when the radio is turned on no matter what the volume was when it was turned off. If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know.
During my search I came across the post above. The GAL setting is one of many and I was wondering if anyone knows what the others do? If it matters I'm in an 08 MCSC with stock radio.
I wonder if it's part of the H/K upgrade? Either that or a dealer setting (doubtful) or one of the settings I mentioned in my first post.
How about it stock radio people, does your volume remain the same when you shut off the radio, or does it always turn on at a low volume?

I'm confused - you posted this in the 1st gen area - but you say you're in an 08. Which radio(s) does this work on?

If you ordered a cabrio with no H/K upgrade then you should have the same thing I do.

Thanks Tom. That's what I was afraid of. So is the auto lower volume on shutoff part of the H/K upgrade?
Came across another question on the way home from work today. Is there anyway to set the random song play so it stays on? I usually like it to be on when I am playing MP3 CD's, but so far it shuts off when the stereo is off and I need to turn it on again every time I turn on the stereo.

You would have to press the RND key every time the radio is turned off/on or when the source is switched.
Jon,
The "Random" function is sort of a PITA. It will drop out of random mode any time you shut the car off, turn the stereo off, or change from one input source to another. Also, if you have the iPod interface, it will drop out of random mode if you switch from one playlist to another. If you have the CD changer, I suspect that switching from disc to disc will do it too.
I'd like to say "you get used to it", but I still haven't. I have gotten in the habit of randomizing the songs in my iPod playlists when I create them in iTunes, so even if I forget to put the stereo in "random" mode, all of the songs from the same artist won't be bunched together in the playlist.

Thanks Scott. I was hoping you'd chime in on this thread. Figured you know about the auto volume question, but perhaps not.
The random play seems like an oversight, but I had the same thing on the radio in my previous car. You'd think that these manufacturers who have the smarts enough to allow the cd player to read MP3's would have figured out that having to turn on the random play every time is (as you say) a PITA. At least the random button is easily accessible. Nearly as disturbing as the fact that you have to turn it on each time is the fact that it kills the current song once pressed.
Hmmmm. iPod interface. There’s a mod I need to put on the to-do-list.

I have the H/K system, and I'm pretty sure it automatically lowers the volume each time I start the car. But, I think that's a function of the H/K system and not the head unit. I've gone through all the settings I could find on the head unit, and none of them seem applicable.
