Nav unit does not work below 35 F Degrees

Has anyone else had this issue where your nav unit doesn't work below freezing?

Starts and runs like a champ above 37 but twice this year we've gotten below 20 and my nav unit never came on until it warmed up.

Just want to see if this is normal or if I need to make a trip to the dealer for warranty work.

thanks

Been below freezing a few days here in Germany and I have not had a problem.

Your disc may be cloudy from condensation. see if it ejects/looks okay. Does it get better after the car has warmed up?
Did you have snow covering the windshield above the GPS antenna?

Please describe more specifically. Do you mean you can't see anything on the display when cold (screen problem), or the nav unit itself doesn't come on until later (with nag warning screen)?

Display lights up and goes dark...does not display the mini logo or anything after the key is turned on.

Power to nav unit is lit. CD has no condensation.

I let the car warm up and then drove it and the nav system was working. Let it sit for 2 hours and came back out and the nav unit did not come on.

Could be a sign of a dying battery as well. There are threads on slow booting nav units where peoples battery died suddenly. Mine did this once as well.

I don't think it is the battery because that was replaced less than 2 years ago.

Is is a servicable battery? If so, have you checked the levels? Just a thought.

According to the dealer this is a known issue. When the temp is below 37 degrees F the Nav unit doesn't come on. I think there is a service bulliten on this but not sure. They updated the Nav unit software to NAVI 29

It was 24 degrees when I got in my car this morning according to the Nav unit which for the first time started.

Bad thing is they said if this doens't fix it that a replacement of the nav unit (under pass seat) should be done to the tune of $2400.

Bummer...and my Mini Certified pre owned warranty doesn't cover this according to the MA.

Hopefully I don't have any further issues and the software upload fixed the problem.

I don't buy that. It has been a constant 32 or lower degree here for the last month and I have hand no problems. Even gone as low as 25 for a few days. No problems at all....

Mine has come on in temps much lower, I think this is bunk. I do remember hearing they updated the design to work better in the cold, but I never got that upgrade.

Yes i'm skeptical as well.

But hoping i don't have to do anything further and I didn't have an issue this morning either.

Supposed to be in 15-20 degree temp range for lows the rest of the week so I'll know for sure this week if I continue to have issues.

And the battery is OE replaced within the last 2 years. I believe those are sealed batteries but not sure since I haven't checked.

Someone in the UK reported the same problem on MINI2 (Nav stops working in cold temperatures). He had bought an '02 and his dealer told him it was a known issue in early units and that the fix is a firmware upgrade.

It's been 7 days now and I haven't had an issue since the sw upgrade.
