I want to start with that before pulling the whole back apart. Has anyone done it? I'm wondering how hard it is to get the carpet up with all the interior trim.

 

It shouldn't be too bad, and I bet it would help alot with road noise.

 

Really want to do it. I was hoping there was someone here that took pictures when they did. I accidentally pulled the fuse cover away and popped the anchors and I couldn't get it back in. I had the dealer do it when they worked on trying to fix that mystery of the car unlocking itself.

 

I've read in other posts that even heavily Dynamating the front doors didn't reduce road noise much:

"The Dynamat has not significantly reduced road noise - most I think comes from tires / suspension and not through the body / doors. The car sounds more “solid” when you close the doors, etc. And there is zero vibration."

I put some Dynamat behind the 5.5" speaker location in the door, but that is all that there is easy access to. Removing the window mechanism is required to do the entire door. This is said to be quite difficult.

Unixgal had the doors Dynamated when her entire audio system was upgraded. The installers had never done an R56 before and under-estimated the difficulty. They said next time they charge considerably more to do it.

I Dynamated the entire back. I also put sound insulation in the side panels and under the floor where the seats were. That helped with the noise from the back, but there is still a lot coming from the front. I'll take a friend out sometime soon with a DB meter and see if we can find where most of it is coming from.

 

OP asked about dynamatting the floors, not doors. Tire and suspension noise will come through the floor, therefore dynamatting it should make a noticable difference. Even vibrations transmitted to the body will be dampened somewhat by dynamat on the floor.

 

How much does this Dynamat weigh? If I was to do the two doors, the floor, and the boot, would it add a significant amount of weight to my MINI?

 

I'm not concerned with the doors. As MotorMouth points out the noise is most likely coming from the floor. When I did my MG I did all the floors and side walls. I did the complete door skins but only for audio purposes. I was stunned how much road noise it cut down. Being a convertible there's still wind noise but I can now hear the exhaust when before all I heard was the road beneath the floor boards and engine.

Robin. Let us know what you find out with the meter.

 

The back took about 28 sq. ft. which is supposed to weigh about 12.6 lbs.



I would guess that adding the front floor would get you to somewhere around 20 lbs.

 

Robin. You don't happen to have the dimensions on that amp do you? I want to find one that can be hidden in the same place. Appreciate all your help.
